Life in the village may seem monotonous to a junior high school student. Local bullies are trouble and parents are annoying. The film stars Ken Mitsuishi as a 50-year-old single father named Miyata Junichi. Back in junior high, Junichi was bullied and made a promise to himself that he would grow up to be really cool. Junichi has been raising his two children, an unemployed 19-year-old named Toshiya (Morioka Ryu) and an 18-year-old high school senior named Momoko (Yoshinaga Jun) on his own since his wife died of cancer 15 years earlier. He works extremely hard as a truck driver to buy whatever he thinks his kids want; and even though money is tight, he never lets it show. One day, Junichi feels ill and becomes obsessed with the idea that he may be dying of cancer like his wife. Convinced his life will soon be ending, he begins putting his affairs in order and borrows tuition money from his best friend and only confidant, Sanada (Taguchi Tomorowo). However, in his never-ending attempt to be a cool adult, he refuses to burden his children with any of his problems.

Takeshi not only fails at his chosen career as a film director, but also at home. Kicked out by his wife, he moves in with his ill brother. While Takeshi's wife pushes for divorce, he is dead set on saving the marriage. Even lovely Ryoko cannot divert his attention - or so he thinks. A black-and-white tale of life, love and personal growth.

Maiko (Ishikawa) is a 17 year old aspiring picture book writer who was abandoned by her widowed father at the age of 3 and has lived in a foster home ever since. She meets Lisa (Fujimoto), also 17, and the two quickly form a bond of understanding as they help each other work out their problems. Lisa holds a grudge against her mother for paying more attention to the men she brings home than her own daughter and Maiko begins to doubt her artistic dream will ever come to fruition after a book editor judges her writing ability harshly.

Following the 2011 tsunami, three women reunite in the family home only to rekindle tense, ruinous relationships.
