      The work of the US Atomic Energy Commission's program called Plowshare is presented. The core of the program is the development of nuclear explosions for industrial purposes. Nuclear explosions are more cost effective than conventional chemical explosions, and can be done at an exponentially larger scale, making what were previously impossible projects now feasible. Nuclear explosions have the same inherent safety risks as chemical explosions with the added risk of radiation, which is becoming less of a concern with improved technology.
