- Deputy Rico Amonte (Danny Nucci) is a rookie in Los Angeles Sheriffs Department. He has a bad encounter with Senior Deputy John Henry Barnes (Ernie Hudson). To his shock, Barnes becomes his training officer.
- Rico has problems in love. A little girl goes missing. The policemen's charity ball approaches. Jablonski and Layne ride together. A man takes a gun into a school classroom.
- Amonte fails to take out an armed attacker in the prescribed manner and has to explain to Barnes and Briggs at a time when he is up for evaluation. - The team pursue a Mexican murderer who has escaped from prison after killing a white supremacist as an escalating race war ensues around them.
