- This alluring, abstract ballet, a triptych in which each piece sparkles with the brilliance of a precious stone, is a lyric tribute to women and to the capital cities of the great dance schools. Couturier, painter and craftsman Christian Lacroix created the glorious costumes and sets which, together with the outstanding performances of the dancers and the sensitive musical direction of Paul Connelly, results in a celebration of sumptuous splendour.
- Traditionsgemäß wird die Spielzeit 2021/22 an der Mailänder Scala am 7. Dezember eröffnet, dieses Jahr mit einer Neuinszenierung von Verdis "Macbeth" unter der Regie von Davide Livermore und mit Riccardo Chailly am Dirigentenpult. Giuseppe Verdis Shakespeare-Drama wartet mit absoluter Starbesetzung auf: Mit Anna Netrebko und Luca Salsi. Nach gewonnener Schlacht wird dem königlichen Heerführer Macbeth von drei Hexen prophezeit, dass er selbst einmal König von Schottland sein werde. Von den Überredungskünsten seiner Frau verleitet, geht er buchstäblich über Leichen, um an sein Ziel zu gelangen. Doch von Schuldgefühlen gepeinigt, verfallen die Macbeths bald in Wahnvorstellungen und werden zu Opfern der eigenen Herrschsucht. In seinem berühmten Drama hat Shakespeare geschichtliche Fakten mit Zauber- und Hexengeschichten vermengt. Der Schottenkönig Macbeth - Mac Bethad mac Findlàich - ist historisch belegt, er lebte von 1005 bis 1057, 1040 wurde er zum König gekrönt. Auch sein Tod durch die Hand von Malcolm wird in den Chroniken erwähnt. In Verdis Fassung, die 1847 in Florenz uraufgeführt wurde, ist die Regierungszeit Macbeths auf wenige Monate reduziert. "Macbeth" ist Verdis zehnte Oper und eine von dreien, denen ein Drama von Shakespeare zugrunde liegt. Der Komponist dirigierte selbst die Uraufführung und wurde vom Publikum enthusiastisch gefeiert. Anna Netrebko, Stammgast auch an der Mailänder Scala, übernimmt in dieser Produktion Rolle der skrupellosen Lady Macbeth, die ihren Gatten zum Königsmörder macht. Netrebko ist eine der gefragtesten Opernsängerinnen unserer Zeit und wird weltweit für ihre bravouröse Interpretation der schwierigsten Rollen geschätzt. 2019 interpretierte sie sie zur Mailänder Saisoneröffnung die Titelrolle in Puccinis "Tosca", 2015 in Verdis "Giovanna d'Arco" und 2011 die Donna Anna in Mozarts "Le Nozze di Figaro". An der Seite der aus Russland stammenden Sopranistin brilliert der italienische Bariton Luca Salsi in der Titelrolle des Feldherrn Macbeth. Er singt unter der Leitung so bedeutender Dirigenten wie James Conlon, Daniele Gatti, Plácido Domingo, Gustavo Dudamel und Riccardo Muti, unter dem er diese große Verdi-Rolle übrigens schon einmal interpretierte. Vervollständigt wird diese erstklassige Besetzung durch den hervorragenden russischen Bassisten Ildar Abdrazakov, den ARTE-Zuschauer in Mailand bereits als Attila in der gleichnamigen Oper ebenfalls von Verdi erlebt haben, und den italienischen Tenor Francesco Meli, einen bekannten Belcanto- und Verdi-Interpreten. Verdi war zeitlebens bestrebt, aus seinen Figuren auch wirkliche Charaktere zu machen und seelische Abgründe klanglich zu durchleuchten. In "Macbeth" gelang ihm dies zum ersten Mal psychologisch überzeugend. So stellt etwa beispielsweise die Szene, in der Lady Macbeth alle verübten Mordtaten schlafwandlerisch-verwirrt durchlebt, die Sängerin vor große Herausforderungen, da die Vokalkomposition verschiedenste Ausdrucksnuancen vereint und ein sehr breites Stimmregister verlangt. Seinen Darstellern verlangte Verdi somit nie Dagewesenes ab: ein klarer Schritt weg vom klassischen Belcanto-Ideal und hin zu unverwechselbarer musikdramatischer Wahrhaftigkeit.

At the royal palace in Memphis, the high priest Ramfis tells Captain Radames that the goddess Isis knows the name of the man who will lead Egyptian troops in the war against Ethiopia. Radames hopes that - if he is chosen and if he wins - he will be given the hand of Aida, the Ethiopian slave of Amneris, the Pharaoh's daughter. But Amneris is also in love with him - A critical look First performed at the Cairo Opera House in December 1871 to celebrate the inauguration of the Suez Canal, Aida is one of the most monumental operas in the Verdian repertoire. In this new production Dutch director Lotte de Beer intends "to take a critical look at European representations of subjugated peoples". - In the course of the 19th century, Shakespeare's works were a constant source of inspiration for the Romantics. In particular, The Tragic History of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, one of the English playwright's most famous plays, dominated by the existential questions of the title role - To be or not to be -, the ghost of his murdered father and his doomed love for Ophelia. Alexandre Dumas père was himself fascinated by this drama and in 1847 he produced a highly successful adaptation. It was on the basis of this version that Michel Carré and Jules Barbier gave Ambroise Thomas the libretto for Hamlet, the last opera to be performed in the Salle Le Peletier. Inspired by the musical and dramaturgical forms of French grand opera, the composer imbues the story with an intensity that contributes to the beauty of the score. A milestone of opera for which Krzysztof Warlikowski, ever fathoming the depths of the human psyche, redraws the Shakespearean contours.
- Ten years after his death, the Paris Opera Ballet payed homage to the American choreographer who considered the Paris Opera as his second home after New York City Ballet. The three pieces performed here illustrate not only the diversity of the choreographer's repertoire and sources of inspiration, but also his love of music and his all-embracing attitude to the performing arts. Jerome Robbins brought new energy to classical dance, introducing 20th century urban rhythms, confirming its status as a modern entertainment form and instilling it with the interrogations of contemporary theatre.
