My name is Hélène and 1952 was not an easy year for me. First, because my parents decided to leave Montpellier for Paris but without taking me and my big brother Michel along with them. Why, I don't know... The fact remains that I had to leave the south for Lille, in the North, where my grandmother Yaya (her true name is Alice but this is the way call her) and my grandfather Georges were living. What I disliked most was that Yaya had a preference for Michel and that Granddaddy was too grumpy. In Lille I also got very upset when pupils at the catholic school I attended told me I was... Jewish. Jewish? I didn't even know that Jews even existed. And when I knew better about them (Michel was more informed than I was), what a shock it was when I learned that my two other grandparents had been sent to a concentration during the war. A little too much for a little girl like me. A sure thing is that I will never forget the year 1952, the year when I was seven....

Francis is a successful car sales assistant, however recently outdone by other employees. His excessive alcohol consumption lets him lose control over his behavior once in a while in the presence of his family and his friends. His friends are confused, and his wife is afraid and in despair. When he is dismissed, he loses his security. One morning he wakes up in a bar in Bangkok and doesn't know how he got there. Francis has lost everything: his wife, his son, his work, his fortune. With a made up story he obtains money by fraud to get back home again.

Stella is a 49-year-old Romanian woman living with her husband in a shanty town located under the Motorway 86, in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Denis, which runs alongside the Eurostar railway tracks. In order to survive, she goes everyday to the same Parisian metro station, sits herself on the stairs leading down to the tube and starts begging. The Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital is one of the few places where she can have "normal" contact with French people. There, she has new teeth made, and so regains her dignity, despite everything.

In an isolated country house in the South of France, Mikaël, a musician, composes a psalm. A young woman, Linda, comes to pick up a suitcase belonging to Sebastien, his companion and friend of Mikaël. It contains hundreds of photos.

Tony, a cheeky teen from Marseille, whose father is absent, has dropped out of school and is hanging around the Canebière. With the help of a gang of small-time racketeers, he tries to escape his precarious and disastrous family situation.
