Chance brings four men together at a table at "The Anchor", a café in Tangier, during a poker game. The entrance of a mysterious woman in the bar brings back memories for all of them and makes each of them identify her with a great love from their past: Blanca, Elena, Lola and Marta.

Barcelona, 1860. Mr. Esteve, owner of a prosperous haberdashery and proud of his son Ramón, attends the christening of his grandson. Twenty years later, Ramón passes away and Mr. Esteve realizes that times have changed and that the family tradition of the haberdashery is at stake.

Noguère, an old patriarch, is about to die and decides to confess at last to a priest. He once lived alone with his son Juste, who helped him to farm the Mauvents land. One night Noguère fired at a couple of trespassers, hurting the girl and killing her fiancé. Giving Catoune, the girl, the shelter of his home, Noguère was forced - however reluctantly it may have been - to break the bad news to the fiancée. For all that Catoune recovered, settled down and later married Juste. After a while Juste left for the war and was soon reported missing. Noguère comforted the distressed young woman so well that she became her mistress. But Juste had not been killed...

Two aspiring bullfighters make their name in comic bullfights. A third, on the other hand, decides to enter the ring as a spontaneous seeker of fortune.

Two cadets from the General Air Academy of the Spanish Army, Daniel and Luis, dispute the love of Elena, the Colonel's daughter. Daniel tries to impress the young woman by executing difficult pirouettes on her house, which provoke the ire of the high command. Luis, who feels deep envy towards his friend, challenges him. But while they are in flight, a terrible storm breaks out, so Luis's plane catches fire and he has to parachute. The only chance to survive from him is to be rescued by Daniel.

Tall, strong vagabond Luis rejects the work an old gentleman offers him, causing his outrage. In his erratic walk, Louis reaches the top of Mounte Oscuro, where Julia, widow of a writer, lives with their daughter Blanca. Despite his initial resistance, Luis ends up staying with Julia to help her work the land--which sows gossip in the neighboring village. Then Blanca falls ill, and when Luis goes to town for the doctor, it is none other than the old gentleman that Luis offended long ago.
