Nan, a successful Broadway star, marries Dan McGovern a widower. On their way home, Dan tells her that he had not told his two children, Buddy and Nancy, that he was getting married. Nan is then confronted with two rude and indifferent stepchildren and the housekeeper, Mrs. Harper. The McGovern's housekeeper Mrs. Harper becomes apprehensive when an old friend intends to visit. She under the false impression that Harper is a wealthy widow. Nan and family decide to help.

Buddy has a jalopy but no drivers license. He convinces Nan to drive him so he can get one but a number of mishaps, some involving her extra large hat, make the journey interesting.

Nan thinks the family operates haphazardly. She decides to put everything and body in a schedule.

Producer Sanford is constantly trying to get Nan to return to stage. He thinks by casting her stepdaughter Nancy in a play is a way for it to happen.

Nan puts Dan on an exercise program that she believes will keep him young. But the more Dan works out the older he feels.
