Thérèse Berthod travels to Africa to take possession of the forest left to her by her father. She quickly becomes disillusioned by reality, especially when she encounters the animosity of her neighbor, the gold prospector Pascal Géraud. After having tried in vain to sell him her forest, she begins to exploit it herself. But Pascal builds a dam to prevent her from bringing trains through. She then decides to build a road, but there too clashes with Pascal. However, she eventually understands that the man sincerely loves the African people, seeing in her a pure product of a destructive white civilization. When he realizes that she has herself a tenderness for the natives, he changes his mind and offers to marry her. But Thérèse cannot bear the ordeal of a blood union. Disgusted by these savage rites, she runs away. Later, she learns that Pascal has built her road, finds him dying and promises to continue his work.
