- While Bill Burnham is jailed for drunkenly shooting up the town, he receives a letter saying that his father has died, his sister Janet is about to marry a worthless count, and the family fortune is in danger. Unable to leave, he convinces his friend, Johnny Wiggins, a motion picture cowboy, to go to his home in Palm Beach, which Bill left as a boy, and impersonate him. Although Johnny's Western manner irritates Janet and her aunt, they put up with him because Bill's sanction for Janet's marriage is needed for her to receive her inheritance. When the count discovers that Johnny is not Bill, he tries to elope with Janet, but is prevented when Johnny lassoes him from his moving automobile. After Johnny forces crooked broker Milton C. Milton, at gunpoint, to make restitution for the losses Janet suffered through Milton's bad stock investments, Johnny marries Ruth, the maid, and leaves, promising that when Bill returns, things will get livelier.
- Railroad magnate Gordon Rogers agrees to allow his daughter, Helen, to marry wealthy idler Billy Deering, Jr., but only if the latter can hold the same job for one month. Billy is hired for an array of jobs, including office clerk and xylophone player, but always quits just before being fired. He then finds work in a restaurant where he is required to dress as a knight in armor and pose as a statue. On one occasion, Gordon, Helen, and Billy's romantic rival, Tom, enter the restaurant, and Billy is nearly fired when Helen recognizes him. Meanwhile, Gordon plans to merge one of his railroads with a company that is in a dispute with Tom's uncle, an unprincipled financier. Acting on the promise of a generous cash reward, Tom is determined to steal documents relating to the merger. Billy manages to stay at his job for thirty days, and in the process, exposes Tom's scheme, winning Gordon's consent to marry Helen.
- Socialite New Yorker James Berkeley and college chum Allan Franklin are rivals for the hand of beautiful Lois Miller. Berkeley marries her, and fifteen years later, he keeps his wife luxuriously attired as a "trademark" to further his business opportunities, although he has not realized his ambition to become wealthy. Allan, now an engineer, visits the Berkeleys and reveals that he has obtained a large tract of oil land from the Mexican government. Hoping to profit from Allan's enterprise, James accompanies him back to Mexico, and brings the reluctant Lois along to keep Allan interested. When Allan and Lois realize their love for each other, she denounces James for using her as a trophy wife. A Mexican bandit, who covets the American woman, leads his gang to capture Lois at a hacienda, and James is slain during the attack. Allan rescues her, and they escape Mexico by leaping on horseback from a precipice into the Rio Grande.
- An idealistic young American during World War I, itching to fight the Germans and not wanting to wait until the U. S. joined the war, journeys to Canada and enlists in the British army. He is sent for training to England, and then to the front in France, where he is wounded. Returned back to England to recuperate from his wounds, he falls in love with the daughter of an Australian minister.
- June Tolliver, whose family has long feuded with the Falins, falls in love with engineer John Hale when he comes to their mountain town. John sends her to the city to be educated with the promise of marriage when she returns. Because John is appointed deputy he tries to remain neutral, but he finds the Falins supporting him when June's Uncle Rufe is accused of murder. June is called to testify during his trial but does not perjure herself for Rufe's sake. To prevent a Tolliver from being hanged, Jud Tolliver has Rufe shot. John is also injured, but June's pleading finally brings an end to the feud.
- Son of Colonel Haddington, Bob leads a posse against raiders in a settlement. During his absence, one of the prize horses is stolen and his father is killed. Bob swears revenge and becomes known as Velantrie, leader of a band of semi-outlaws, and befriends a priest, Father Hillaire. At a mission, he meets Val, daughter of John Hannon, a wealthy ranch-owner. Later, Bob is suspected of being the feared "Black Rustler," but he learns that Hannon is indeed the guilty party and the man who killed his father. Bob decides to leave; but he meets Hannon, who has been wounded, and exchanges places with him. Hannon confesses to Val and dies in her arms; she rides to rescue Bob just as he is about to be hanged.
- Fresh from the country, Sylvester Tibble secures a six dollar-a-week job at his Uncle Enoch Jones's antiquated jug business. One night he drifts into a cabaret and meets dancer Junie Budd who teaches him her profession. They become dancing partners and make a big hit on Broadway. Returning home from a prolonged business trip, Sylvester discovers that Harkins, a rival jug manufacturer, is about to buy out his uncle. Previously denounced as a "dancin' fool" by his Uncle Enoch, Sylvester now saves the business with an influx of new orders gained through his modern business techniques. Sylvester then enters into business partnership with his uncle and a marriage partnership with Junie.
- Richard Gaylord, Jr. is a modern Lothario who has so many sweethearts that his father does not know what to do with him. Tired of paying to get his son out of one romantic entanglement after another, the elder Gaylord sends his son to the Basque region of France, believing that the women there will accept attentions only from their own people. Almost immediately, a local girl, Yvonne Hurja becomes infatuated with Richard, whom she sees as being able to help her break free from the unwanted attention of local guardsman Julio. A rivalry grows between Richard and Julio.
- A young British girl born and raised in India loses her neglectful parents in an earthquake. She is returned to England to live at her uncle's estate. Her uncle is very distant due to the loss of his wife ten years before. Neglected once again, she begins exploring the estate and discovers a garden that has been locked and neglected. Aided by one of the servants' brothers, she begins restoring the garden, and eventually discovers some other secrets of the manor.
- Wealthy American financier Madison Hale is bidding against Govrian Texler, the financial advisor to the King of Maritizia for the concession to run a transcontinental railway through the country. When Hale's son Dick completes his college education, he decides to visit Maritizia, the birthplace of his great-grandfather. There he meets Princess Irenia and they fall in love, arousing the jealousy of Ferdinand Vaslof, Texler's nephew, who is also in love with the princess. Ferdinand has Dick imprisoned on false charges, and when Hale, Sr. arrives to look after his business affairs, the princess proposes that he kidnap her and her brother and hold them as willing hostages for Dick's safety. Hale then enters the Council Chamber, secures the loan with which Texler had held the king in his power, and forces him to sign an order for Dick's release. After all the prisoners are released, the nobility of Dick's great-grandfather is established and he and the Princess receive their fathers' blessings.
