- Biographical look at the bombastic love affair that writers Dashiell Hammett and Lillian Hellman shared in 1940 and 50's Hollywood. Refusing to marry, but deeply in love, the two engaged in many affairs and battled the bottle. Dashiell served in both World wars, but in the 1950's, he was branded a Communist and cast into prison during the McCarthy witch hunts. Hellman likewise was branded a Communist, but was kept out of prison. Neither were able to work, requiring Lillian to take a job as a sales-woman in a boutique while Dashiell suffered from tuberculosis and eventually lung cancer. Bebe Neuwirth also appears as socialite-writer Dorothy Parker.
- Victor Diaz's youngest daughter Lola must marry a man approved by her dad before her approaching birthday to cash, or lose forever, a fat trust fund her mother put aside. So she picks up hunky day laborer Jesus, offering him $100,000 a year to play the part after a make-over to Victor's taste. Then she gradually learns he's no Latino but a 'would be' musician Bo, and the pair starts falling in love. Meanwhile his fiancée and her fiancé Marco, hand-picked by her father to help in the business and keep her in line, are at close behind and Bo's sleazy brother Bread worms his way in. In fact Marco is in league with Lola's elder sister Simona.
- Whilst the plot centers around a policeman, this is not a police story. In fact John McKeown emphatically dislikes being a policeman. Two teenage boys discover a murdered man at a breakers yard they had intended to rob. They are arrested on suspicion of murder, but it becomes obvious to McKeown that these were just two amateur burglars who got more than they bargained for. During the course of the investigation, McKeown discovers that Dex, 17, a parks and gardens laborer, is bringing up his younger brother and sister alone. An unlikely friendship develops as McKeown becomes impressed by what Dex is making of his life. Although living on a council estate on the fringes of Manchester, Dex has created a beautiful garden (mainly from materials he has lifted from work). McKeown and his girlfriend Sandra become regular visitors to Dex's home, inspired by this young family who seem so determined to survive. The situation changes radically when McKeown suddenly has reason to question Dex's involvement in the original murder, which raises question about the way Dex and his brother and sister came to be parentless. McKeown starts unpeeling discrepancies and lies, gleaned mainly from personal conversations. His credibility as a policeman has now sunk and his colleagues at work suspect he's heading for a breakdown. As McKeown unravels the secrets of Dex's life, he begins to take stock of his own.
- The made-for-cable documentary film The Real Eve is predicated on the theory that the human race can be traced to a common ancestor. The mitochondrial DNA of one prehistoric woman, who lived in Africa, has according to this theory been passed down from generation to generation over a span of 150,000 years, supplying the "chemical energy" to all humankind.

Butch has a more dominant role in this series. Richard Cadell and Vicki Lee Taylor star with Sooty, Sweep, Soo, and Little Cousin Scampi. There's a new theme tune and a new location, Sooty's House, where a bevy of guest starts constantly drop in to visit.
