Smalltown runaway teen Hattie Lou is hired as maid for the Van Gore family, bound for the South Seas on their yacht. On board she falls for the son Spencer, who "marries" her in a mock wedding. A baby and hard times result from the union.

During the World War, Donald Allen is reported killed in action but is really a victim of amnesia. His French nurse, Suzanne, gives him a new identity (John Rolfe), and they marry. Together they get jobs as servants on Donald's estate, now in the hands of Corinne, his ex-fiancée. He is recognized, and after an operation he regains his memory but forgets his wife. Corinne, in the meanwhile, attempts to run off with some of Donald's money but is foiled by Suzanne. Donald finally recognizes his wife.

Dave, Mary Heath's brother, is accidentally killed in a gambling den. Her sweetheart, John Trevor, discovers that the den is secretly owned by his mother, whom he has considered to be independently wealthy. John denounces his mother, despite the fact that the money she earned supported him in college. As Dave was the head of the Heath household, John, feeling responsible for the boy's death, offers himself as a replacement. At first treated as a slave in the household, John later wins the family's love by risking his life during a snowstorm to save the Heath twins.
