In the days and weeks that followed the 2001 shipwreck in the Galapagos Islands of the oil-tanker Jessica carrying over 250 000 gallons of crude oil, local population, assisted by the U.S. Coastguard and volunteers from around the world, laboured intensely to contain the oil spill.
