While vacationing in Mexico, Stefanie Ritter is suspected of murder and ends up in prison. She manages to escape, but a nightmare awaits her at home. Nothing is like it was before she left.

Just now, 17-year-old Stefan Hunziker is happy about the mild judgment that Dominique Kuster brought him out for a fight and now his father has a fatal accident with the car. The "lawyer without a license" suspects that Baluba's research into child labor in cobalt mines in the Congo has something to do with the murder. During his research he came across the respected charity "Our Heart for Africa" by Henrik Wollschlger, whose patrons also included the upper class of the financial metropolis of Zurich and some wealthy clients of his old friend, the star lawyer Reto Zanger. In addition, shortly before his death, the murdered man had contact with Anneli Keller, the Africa expert at the Federal Foreign Office, and her boss Ulf Hellmann. Meanwhile, Dominique takes on the widow of the murdered journalist, Malia Baluba - without realizing that she is also in great danger.

"Franz Brosi is innocent ..." - this anonymous message arouses the curiosity of the "lawyer without a license" Thomas Borchert. His clerk, Dominique, immediately knows who it is about: the cabinet maker Brosi was her first client as a public defender and has been in prison for the murder of a young banker for eleven years. She can hardly believe that someone is now claiming his innocence - after all, Brosi had refused her help at the time and made an extensive confession. But Borchert wouldn't be Borchert if he didn't want to get something out of the silent model convict. But Brosi, whom he visits with Dominique in prison, does not want any easing of detention or legal representation. But Borchert does not give up and he soon suspects that there must be more to the story of the repentant sinner who wants to serve the full sentence. While Dominique is getting the old police files from Captain Furrer, Borchert drives to Prättigau to find the anonymous letter writer. In Brosi's home village, the lawyer tries to find out on his own what really happened. Not only the onset of winter in the remote mountain world, but also the icy rejection of the residents makes him shiver. Borchert soon believes he is on the trail of a secret for which Brosi holds out his head.

The sudden death of the watch manufacturer Ludwig Sutter causes a tangible inheritance dispute: of all people, his eldest daughter Anna, who as a master watchmaker could and would like to continue running the traditional manufacture Sutter and Valois, remains outside of the succession - all shares go to her younger half-brothers. The prospective pharmacist Sina Leuthold puts her willingness to help in the devil's kitchen: When she lets regular customer Reto Zanger, who urgently wants to fill in a prescription for a heart medication shortly after the shop closes, come in, a masked, armed man also gains access. The robber shoots Reto, clears out the drug safe and storms in with his lucrative booty. When the pharmacist Siebert, a friend of Reto's on the golf course, resigns from Sina for breach of duty, she desperately seeks support from Borchert and his boss Dominique. After all, Sina is only three weeks away from her traineeship to complete her studies. The supposedly simple court date ends in a fiasco, however, because Reto remembers on the witness stand that the young woman obviously knows the perpetrator and is probably involved in the robbery. But Borchert quickly realizes during his dangerous research that Sina should only serve as a scapegoat.

While the Zurich cultural scene discovers the touching portrait photography by Corinna Riemer at a vernissage, Borchert finds a corpse in front of the door: organizer and art patron Altweger was shot in the courtyard of his own gallery. Statements about a loud argument incriminate the caterer Giovanni Lazzari, who has traces of smoke on his hand and has to admit illegal possession of a pistol. At the request of Lazzari's wife Cristina, Borchert and his boss Dominique take over the defense. However, his instinct tells the "lawyer without a license" that his client may not have fired the fatal shot, but that he was involved in the crime. Borchert also uses the observation skills of the experienced Corinna Riemer, to whom he feels attracted, and thus comes across an intimate secret and two other murder suspects: Altweger's younger wife and his nephew Stephan are a couple. But there are other hidden conflicts that Borchert must bring to light in order to solve the mysterious case.

After an argument with her mother, the youth psychologist Julia Egger causes an accident, seriously injures a man and drives away, lost in thought. Her explanation that she was deliberately pushed aside by a dark SUV and did not see the man initially sounds unconvincing to her lawyers Borchert and Dominique - especially since Julia has a history of drinking and driving. While her younger half-sister Mavi sticks by Julia, her parents don't seem to be of any help. When Borchert felt the freezing cold of her ambitious mother and her career-focused husband, he felt reminded of his childhood - and felt a special obligation to his client. In order to get confidential police information, the "lawyer without a license" persuades his partner Dominique to commit a serious breach of trust.

A spectacular protest action triggers a large-scale police operation: Hans Siegenthaler rains leaflets down from the Schanz AG high-rise, describing Bernadette Schanz as the murderer of his daughter. In fact, even Captain Furrer believes that the CEO stabbed the young woman after a jealous argument. However, since the criminal trial ended in an acquittal, a new trial seems almost impossible. Borchert and law firm boss Dominique nevertheless promise their client Siegenthaler that they will find a way to bring the guilty party to justice. When Bernadette is shot with his rifle and her husband Beat is seriously injured, everything points to Siegenthaler. Instead of trusting the justice system, he goes into hiding and makes himself even more suspicious. But Borchert and Dominique continue to believe in his innocence. When Borchert uncovers the web of lies and addictions, he sees the opportunity to help his client.

Borchert hates it when someone lies to him. Already at the first meeting with the murder suspect Xavier Schliemann, a childhood sweetheart of the law firm boss Dominique, he begins to have doubts about his sincerity. The smart diamond dealer denies having shot his ex-business partner Nikol in the hotel room. Instead of testifying to Captain Furrer as agreed, Xavier goes into hiding with the help of his best friend Katharina Kolling. For Borchert, the limit is full: he will only continue if the suspect tells him the truth. Now the "lawyer without a license" is encountering a bitter struggle for survival in the jewelry industry, which his client wants to revolutionize with synthetic diamonds. The fact that Xavier, who is about to marry his pregnant fiancée Greta, is in financial trouble makes the case even more complicated. Only when Borchert and Dominique understand who really wants to get even with the "Ladies' Man" do they come across a plan for revenge.

Thomas Borchert is not very impressed by AI-based case analysis. When Captain Furrer asks him and law firm head Dominique Kuster for help in the hunt for a serial killer, the "lawyer without a license" relies on his knowledge of human nature and intuition. There are no discernible connections between the victims - a student, a cook, a policewoman and a politician. In the perfectly executed murders, the "Zurich Killer" proceeds completely differently in each case, but leaves cardboard stencils depicting the sun and the moon. What does this one commonality mean? While the self-confident profiler Ayla Deniz unsuccessfully feeds her AI computers with investigation data, the pressure on Furrer grows: his colleague Lueger wants to use the spectacular case to beat him to the punch for a promotion. Borchert and Dominique begin to investigate on their own. As usual, the lawyer duo ignores all warnings.

Six dead - and each time a cardboard template with the sun and moon at the crime scene: Does the "Zurich Killer" kill according to a mysterious pattern - or is there a connection between the victims? While Captain Furrer hopes to have found the killer in Timo Brock, Dominique falls under a delivery truck in front of Borchert's eyes. What looks like a tragic accident turns out to be an attempted murder. When Borchert also comes into the line of fire shortly afterwards, he is certain that his research is on the right track and that Brock cannot be the perpetrator. A tragic traffic accident increasingly becomes the focus of Borchert's investigation. In this accident, a family was wiped out except for the father, Moritz Bührer. The former haulage driver Jürg Dolmas, who is in a wheelchair and is cared for by his sister Andrea, also comes into Bochert's focus. But the "lawyer without a license" initially draws the wrong conclusions.

The influential Zurich weapons manufacturer Gessler knows that he and his 18-year-old daughter Zoe are in constant danger. When someone breaks into the highly secured luxury villa, the schoolgirl flees to the panic room. The next morning, Gessler's bodyguard Lösch is found beaten to death in a hacker lounge. In order to find out who wants to use the fugitive Daniel as a scapegoat, Borchert uncovers who exchanged money for what purpose.
