After suffering a personal tragedy, Vincent Picard steadfastly pursues his profession as a history-geography teacher, simply trying to stay afloat and keep going. Hiding his feelings, he continues to teach and handle the everyday problems of his pupils, including Lucas, paraplegic, deliberately putting himself in danger to forget his condition.

Vincent has difficulty in coming to terms with being a father. He's also worried about Chloé, a pupil who has recently lost her smile and sunny personality. Between school bullying about her weight and the return of an enigmatic cousin, Vincent wonders about the real reasons for Chloé's suffering.

Vincent may finally have managed to connect with his daughter, but his anger against the hospital continues to grow. Could the tragedy have been avoided? His own helplessness is echoed by that of Juliette, whose mother died a year earlier. A loss from which she has never really recovered.

Vincent is under pressure as he receives a visit from his parents-in-law. Still suffering acutely, they are having difficulty in finding their place in their grand-daughter's life. He also has to handle the situation of Mehdi, whose explanations for the bruises on his face are far from convincing.

Vincent's new friendship with Clémence, a single mother, finally has him smiling again. But he also has to deal with Zoé, who is suffering from fainting spells and whose marks have dropped dramatically. Zoé is hiding a secret that endangers both her future and that of her family.

After a particularly trying school year, Vincent becomes angry during an inspection by the school authorities. Close to being a psychological analysis it makes him wonder if he's actually cut out to be a teacher. In class, Alex openly expresses his extreme views which makes things particularly tense.
