Seven kids at summer camp are "sucked in" to a strange "Digital World", where strange looking creatures, who call themselves Digimon, greet them.

Shellmon attacks the kids while they are on a beach trying to call for help. Agumon digivolves to Greymon and blasts him away.

The kids run away from a battle. While spending the night in a trolley cart on a small island, they are attacked by Seadramon. Gabumon eventually digivolves to Garurumon and defeats the aquatic digimon.

A Meramon attacks the Yokomon village where the group is resting. Biyomon digivolves to Birdramon to defeat him, causing a large black gear to be expelled from his body.

The kids stumble upon a strange factory where they find an Andromon caught in the machinery. After they release him he attacks them. Izzy discovers strange coding, which he uses to digivolve Tentomon into Kabuterimon. Kabuterimon destroys the Black Gear controlling Andromon. Apologizing for his behavior, Andromon shows the children out of the factory.

While escaping the Numemon who attacked the group in the sewers on their way out of the factory, the kids are split up and Mimi ends up in Toy Town after being attacked by a Monzaemon. There she finds the other kids acting strangely. Palmon manages to digivolve into Togemon and destroys the Black Gear that was controlling Monzaemon.

Joe climbs Infinity Mountain in an attempt to calm the group and find the source of the Black Gears. Up there he encounters Unimon, who attacks the pair. Gomamon digivolves to Ikkakumon and destroy's the Black Gear inside of him.

The kids meet the ruler of File Island, Devimon, the controller of the Black Gears. He, along with Ogremon and a possessed Leomon, attack the kids who manage to escape. They end up in a mysterious mansion, which proves to be a hallucination created by Devimon. Devimon breaks File Island into multiple, smaller islands and separates the kids onto the different islands.

Tai and Agumon land on a snow-covered island and are forced to defeat a Frigimon. After destroying the Black Gear that was controlling him, they cross over to the island where Matt and Gabumon landed. Meanwhile, Matt goes out to search for his brother against Gabumon's advice and gets hypothermia. Once the two boys meet up, they end up fighting each other until a Mojyamon attacks them. They defeat the Mojyamon and expel the Black Gear that was controlling him.

Mimi and Palmon are harassed by Sukamon and Chuumon. After escaping them, they cross over to the next island, where Izzy and Tentomon landed. After they reunite, Mimi and Tentomon get lost in a labyrinth and are attacked by Centarumon. Izzy and Palmon finally find them and their Digimon battle and destroy Centarumon's Black Gear. After the battle, Leomon appears and attacks the children, but is driven back by the light of their Digivices.

After suffering an attack from Ogremon at sea, Joe and Gomamon find themselves on an island with Sora and Biyomon. They are captured by a band of Bakemon intent on eating them. Gomamon and Biyomon manage to escape and digivolve to fight the Lord Bakemon. They eventually defeat him with help from Joe's repetitive chanting.

T.K. and Patamon end up in Primary Village, the place where all Digimon are born. There they are confronted by Elecmon, the guardian of the baby Digimon. He struggles with Patamon, having mistaken the two for intruders. To avoid a fight, T.K. proposes that they settle their dispute with a tug-o-war. Patamon wins and earns Elecmon's respect and trust.

The entire group reunites and is attacked by Leomon. After Leomon is defeated with the light of the Digivices, he tells the children about the prophecies of the "DigiDestined." The group goes back to Infinity Mountain for the final showdown with Devimon. There, Devimon absorbs many Black Gears and grows in size and power-turning the fight in his favor until Patamon digivolves into Angemon and destroys him. Angemon, having used up so much power, reverts into a Digi-egg.

A mysterious person named Gennai appears as a hologram after a fight with Devimon and urges the group to travel to the continent of Server in order to defeat another enemy. Gennai also tells them about objects called Crests that will allow their Digimon to digivolve even further. They build a raft and leave File Island, but are soon swallowed up by Whamon who is still under the control of a Black Gear. After the gear is removed, Whamon takes the kids to where their Tags-the objects that the Crests are stored in-are hidden.

The kids arrive in a Koromon village overrun with Pagumon, who trick the kids and kidnap Tokomon. Etemon learns of the arrival of the DigiDestined and confronts them. He uses his Dark Network to prevent the Digimon from digivolving and then traps the group inside a cave where they discover their first Crest, Tai's Crest of Courage.

Tai is impatient to see Agumon's new Digivolution, and forces him to eat large bundles of food. Later, the Digidestined fall into one of Etemon's traps, and it's up to Agumon to try to rescue them. However, with all the food he ate earlier he's too slow to fight. Tai keeps on him to digivolve, and eventually, he does, but into a monster named SkullGreymon. Right before he turns on the children, he loses his strength and de-digivolves into Koromon. Tai apologizes for his harsh behavior on his Digimon, and Joe manages to find his crest.

While the group travels through a hot desert, a cruise ship passes by and Mimi convinces a Numamon to let them on. However, the whole ship was another trap by one of Etemon's henchmen, Kokatorimon. Palmon and Biyomon digivolve and defeat him, and then rescue all the children. At the end of the episode, Mimi finds her crest, the Crest of Sincerity.

The children are attacked by a Kuwagamon, and Tai is scared to let Agumon digivolve remembering of what happened before. The group is saved by Piximon, who takes them to his hideout for what he calls "training". Matt and Izzy sneak out at night to look for their crests and find them, but expose Piximon's hidden dwelling to Etemon. Tai and Agumon find themselves and renew their faith in each other, and Agumon digivolves without worry to save the children from Tyrannomon.

When Takeru's crest is found, an e-mail comes to Koushirou claiming he can help them if they will free him. Should they trust this unknown source?

After a massive battle, Tai saves Sora from Datamon, and the last crest for Sora is finally recovered. Datamon tries to mark revenge on Etemon and drags him down into a digital black hole. Etemon fights the suction and manages to maintain shape to attack the children one last time. The children are saved when Greymon digivolves to MetalGreymon, the first ultimate level Digimon on the kids' side. However, it's at a cost, as Tai and his Digimon are swallowed by a dimensional warp created by the battle.

Just as the kids are about to be destroyed by MetalSeadramon, Whamon comes to their rescue and they flee to the bottom of the ocean. However, when MetalSedramon catches up to them, a battle begins.

The kids manage to escape MetalSeadramon's minion, Scorpiomon. They try to escape by sea, but are immediately stopped by MetalSeadramon.

Matt, Gabumon, Joe, and Gomamon are forced to work at Digitamamon's diner to pay off a meal.

Izzy is trapped in Vademon's pocket dimension and robbed of his curiosity. DemiDevimon attempts to buy Izzy's Crest from Vademon and, in the confusion, Izzy recovers his Crest and his curiosity.

An ancient DigiWorld prophecy comes true when Myotismon returns as VenomMyotismon. Following the end of the prophecy, Angemon and Angewomon shoot Tai and Matt with their arrows of light.

Sora tells the group about the meanings of their Crests and how DemiDevimon said her Crest would never glow.

Myotismon uses Gatomon to try and identify the eighth child. Kari is found by Phantomon and gives herself up so that Matt and Sora are not harmed. Meanwhile, Joe and T.K. travel back through Odaiba Bay.

Myotismon creates a barrier of fog around Odaiba and evil Digimon roam the streets. Bakemon and Phantomon begin taking people from their homes and holding them prisoner.

Wizardmon finds Kari's Digivice and brings Gatomon and Kari together. It is revealed that Kari is the eighth DigiDestined child and that Gatomon is her partner.

The children decide to travel to Odaiba to continue their search for the Eighth Child. After spending all their money on food, they luckily get offered a ride by Sora's cousin, but don't make it far. Gesomon attacks them from under a bridge, and a large fight ensues. The battle stirs up so much commotion, the kids don't try to hide their Digimon anymore, and ride on Ikkakumon's back towards Odaiba.

At long last, the DigiDestined return to their homes. Kari's Digivice - which she has no knowledge of - gets carried off by her cat. The Digivice sets off a signal that brings in DemiDevimon, Raremon, and Izzy.

The DigiDestined continue their search for the eighth child. Gatomon crosses paths with Kari and wonders if she could be the eighth child.

Matt and TK stumble across Pumpkinmon and Gotsumon, two of Myotismon's digimon that are ignoring their duty and just having fun. Matt and TK have to stop the two of them from accidentally hurting other people and themselves.

Wizardmon finds Kari's Digivice and brings Gatomon and Kari together. It is revealed that Kari is the eighth DigiDestined child and that Gatomon is her partner.

Hikari gets her DigiDevice, but while doing so Wizardmon sacrifices himself. Because of that experience, Gatomon transforms into Angewomon

The group travels once again to the Digital World only to be attacked by the Digimon Emperor.

Agumon and Gabumon warp-digivolve into WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon. Even these two mega level digimon can't defeat the more powerful than ever, VenomMyotismon. The digimon combine their attacks and the kids crests begin to glow, destroying VenomMyotismon. Just when the kids think their job is finished, they look up into the sky and see that the digiworld is up above them and up-side-down. They then realize that they must fix things in the DigitalWorld before things in the real world will return to normal. The kids make the hard decision to say goodbye to their parents. A rainbow then appears and pulls them back into the sky which is the Digital World.

Gomamon is injured and left for dead by the Digimon Emperor. Joe goes with the new DigiDestined to save him. But soon after they come into the digital world, Cody gets hurt, and Joe stays to help him.

The kids manage to escape MetalSeadramon's minion, Scorpiomon. They try to escape by sea, but are immediately stopped by MetalSeadramon.

Just as the kids are about to be destroyed by MetalSeadramon, Whamon comes to their rescue and they flee to the bottom of the ocean. However, when MetalSedramon catches up to them, a battle begins.

Whamon is killed trying to help WarGreymon, who finally manages to defeat MetalSeadramon. The kids then go into a forest were they are continually taunted by Puppetmon, who uses toys to move them around. He kidnaps T.K., who manages to demolish the toys Puppetmon was using to control the kids and escapes. Matt leaves the group after his little brother returns.

Matt is tricked by Cherrymon, a minion of Puppetmon, into believing that Tai is his enemy. Meanwhile, Puppetmon's platoon of Garbagemon are handled by Lillymon and MetalGreymon.

Ken, angry at his inability to control SkullGreymon, works on his Dark Ring. Wormmon, in the hope that Ken might use him in his experiments, frees Agumon.

Just after finding a new Digi-Egg, the DigiDestined are attacked by Flymon and MetalGreymon, under the control of the Emperor's improved Dark Spiral.

Leomon returns as SaberLeomon, and saves Joe and Mimi from MetalEtemon. He is later destroyed by MetalEtemon when he attemps to save Mimi a second time.

Kari falls ill, and Tai becomes nearly hysterical in his attempts to help her. Machinedramon attacks them in a mechanical city under his control, and the group is separated.

Kari recovers, and, along with Sora and T.K., begins searching for the others. They run into WaruMonzaemon, and Kari frees the Numemon he has enslaved, who then begin calling her "Queen".

The kids again split into two groups to prepare for battle with the final Dark Master. On Spiral Mountain, Tai and his group are attacked by LadyDevimon, a beautiful, ruthless, and powerful assassin sent by Piedmon who simultaneously takes on Angewomon, MegaKabuterimon, Andromon, Angemon, Kabuterimon, Birdramon, and Agumon. Tai tells Sora and T.K. to find the others (Joe and Mimi). Joe and Mini find Elecmon in the now destroyed Primary Village and joins them on the quest for the final battle. Joe and Gomamon decide to go off by themselves for a while to see if they can find their own place in the world. Meanwhile, the battle on Spiral turns into a fierce, one-on-one battle of feminine pride between Ladydevimon and Angewomon, complete with slapping and hair-pulling. Ladydevimon defeats Angewomon in their catfight, but just as Ladydevimon is able to finish Angewomon off, the Digidestined comes to Angewomon's rescue, clearing the path to Piedmon.
