Lastman

One of the most unique shows i've ever seen. Every episode is just different. Animation is lacking but the show is too good for you to notice. Soundtrack and monster design is just exquisite.

Note, this review is for the VRV version which has this in English and French subtitles as well.

Last Man is best described as unique animation with American, French, and Japanese influences. For those of you who are familiar with the comedy "Archer" this has a similar sense of humor but in a dramatic action series. Episodes have titles such as "You're an Asshole Aldona" and characters will tell others to "Get out of my mom!" Yet despite the raunchy humor there is a good story here. Richard Aldona is a lovable aimless bachelor who finds himself protecting the daughter of an old friend from a supernatural gang of sorts. It reeks of crime noir but with modern sensibilities and plenty of throwbacks to nostalgia such as Blaxploitation films, 80's music, Walk-mans, and of course 90's anime. The original French dub is the most dramatic version, while the English version is the most hilarious due to the camp factor. I like them both equally, and this comes from a person who normally prefers to watch media in their original language.

This is for someone who wants to try something new. If you are not patient with this it may be off-putting with it's unique storytelling, juvenile humor, and brutal violence. If you are open-minded however...enjoy the show!

Lastman is one of those series that juggles different themes and even genres that might feel strange "on paper" but the creators knew exactly what they were doing.

Blending the type of noir storytelling with the action of the 90´s while adding mistery and fantasy, it´s on a league of it´s own and it is very refreshing. Backed with an excellent direction, animation, soundtrack, everything just works effortlessly to deliver a great adventure filled with just the right amount of character development, action and entertainment.

The show can be light hearted but knows how and when to be serious enough for you to feel engaged and deals with themes that are intended for a mature audience, while clocking at 8 mins per ep.

Lastman mashes together unlikely themes, including boxing, organised crime, the occult & monster slaying. The setting feels like an extreme, and frequently comical, parody of the United States (though, I'm not sure if that's intentional).

Season 1 is fast-paced, humorous and concerned with all four of the aforementioned themes. The plot is linear and breadcrumbs of the core mystery are fed to the viewer in most episodes, though there are a few bizarre (irrelevant?) episodes half way through.

Season 2 takes a "simultaneous arcs" approach, wherein each episode follows one character's POV through the season's plot beats. The mystery is in unravelling the web of events & players. Two episodes focus on organised crime, three on the occult, and one seems like an excuse for gore (gore is so common in season 2, it loses impact).

I enjoyed season 2 for its longer episodes, interconnected plots & more mature storytelling, but I also thought season 1 ended in a good place. Many occult secrets are revealed in season 2, and I think that detracts from the mysterious ending of season 1.

Overall, good show with a few "what were they thinking?" episodes.

This show is one of the few western animated series that I consider a competition to Avatar.

Lastman and Avatar are shows that you could probably show to an anime fan or to a person who only watches live action media and they could get into it and even have it at the top of their list

This show is just so fun and engaging that I can't do it justice with this review
