A biological paternal half-brother of comic book writer Dwayne McDuffie, a fact neither was aware of while McDuffie was alive.

His birth father, Leroy McDuffie, is black, and his birth mother, Carrie Herr, is caucasian, of half Polish and half Belgian Flemish descent. He was adopted as a child. His adoptive father, Michael Eugene Winfield Key, is also African-American. His adoptive mother, Patricia Walsh, is white.
