Deadline
"With the vibes reminiscent of 'Friday the 13th' and 'Sleep Away Camp', this film delivers nostalgia that captures the essence of the golden age of horror slasher cinema.
United States
Bloody Disgusting
"The directors’ acting backgrounds translate to an ensemble of entertaining and lively performances, though their debut is less effective in form and slasher thrills. (...) Rating: ★★½ (out of 5)"

"While they are some funny moments and a few good, gruesome kills, it's mostly uninventive."

United States
AV Club
"The movie’s approach to slaughter and mayhem is more chill than chilling. It’s here to make people laugh, not give them the ick. Unfortunately, it isn’t particularly great at doing either"

The Hollywood Reporter
"Finn Wolfhard’s summer camp slasher film is limp as horror but likable as comedy"
Canada
JoBlo
"It’s a decent debut for Wolfhard and Bryk, who have a love for the genre, and while I didn’t love this movie, I’ll be eager to see what they do next."
United States
Variety
"The movie’s hella derivative, but still quite entertaining, with an appealing cast and memorable characters"
United States

"'Hell of A Summer' might not have the most original premise, but Bryk and Wolfhard are fully aware of that, creating one of the most entertaining and crowd-pleasing slasher films of the 2020s
United States
The New York Times
"Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, the writers, directors and stars, take a more conservative, and therefore more boring, approach to their horror homage"
United States

"[It] accomplishes most of what it sets out to do, even if its ambitions are low (...) Rating: ★★½ (out of 4)"
United States
The Wrap
"Occasionally amusing but mostly empty"
United States
SlashFilm
"With its nostalgia-tinged tale set in the present day, [it] becomes less of a lazy throwback and more of that rare beast, the cozy horror film (...) Rating: 7 (out of 10)"
United States
IndieWire
"A throwback more fun than scary"
United States
Paste Magazine
"A lightly amusing, somewhat amateurish film that’s ultimately less homage than post-it reminder: Remember to pick up an ’80s-style slasher-comedy hybrid for dinner (...) Rating: 5,3 (out of 10)"
