"quite through," Middle English thurgh-out, from late Old English þurhut "completely through, in at one end or side of and out another" (now archaic or obsolete); see through + out (adv.). Similar formation in German durchaus. By c. 1200 as "during (a specified time);" c. 1300 as "all over within." As an adverb from 12c., "in all respects, everywhere, in every part."
