I had an Arlatax conversion done for me but man, is it sweet! It is based on the Domitar model. I will be posting up pics once I have the army ready to compete (my group is planning to start back up in the summer after the pandemic eases). I'll link to it here when I've got it up
Yeah, I have noticed that expensive HQs are, well, scary so might try to free up some points to at least beef mine up a little. Scoria I'll save for a huge 3000 point game if I ever join in one of those! And that would let the Arlatax be the Homonculex, too . It does seem like his unit / transport would get blown off the table, though, if he's in the army... can't imagine anyone wanting him to get close
Thanks SirDonlad, I really appreciate the detailed thoughts! While I do have the models, I am open to units I haven't shown here, so if there are some you love please feel free to share
The Magos loadouts are definitely helpful, I probably should spare some points for mine (such as by dropping the Gun Battery). I've always cheaped out on HQs, but do have a nicely converted Magos on Abeyant for when I want to run a heavier one (modeled to be Anacharis Scoria, but could represent a generic Magos, too)
Man, that would be awesome, but in reading it again just now I think the wording doesn't support it, unless there's a FAQ:
Spoiler:
The Techno-Arcana rule says "Each Tech-Priest Auxillia must chooose one of the following Techo-Arcana, which applies to the unit..."
Each option then starts with "Adepts are" or "Adepts gain", etc. So, to me, it looks like the unit (Tech-Priest Auxillia) must choose one of the options, which then references what it gives the Adepts or Servo-automata. But if each Adept got to pick one, the main rule should say "Each Adept must choose one of the following..."
Heck yeah I'll add Lacyraemarta to the list if it works, though
What do you think about the list overall? One thing I'm really considering is magnetizing and converting my Myrmidons so they can be run as Secutors or Destructors. That would let me split the Krios into two separate units, so they're not such a juicy target to distribute damage between.
In that case, though, with the Secutors' short range, they probably want to ride in the transport. Do you like the Adsecularis in the transport as it is now (for a mobile troop option, and to keep them safe so they don't just evaporate) or should I use it as more of a threat and put a killier unit in there, like the Myrmidons? In that case, I might also drop the sentry gun to give the Magos some killing power with those points - would love to know how you equip your Magos!
Jorim, thank you so much for the amazing feedback!! I also broke out my tomes of knowledge and it looks like to confer the ability to the unit, the rule would need to be Slow and Purposeful, rather than just Relentless, and no wargear I can find will do that. Yay for tomes of knowledge
So, here's another crack at it! This time, putting the Magos and Adsec unit in the transport. This makes it a cheap mobile scoring unit, along with the Magos making it a mobile Cybertheurgy and Cortex Controller platform (since he doesn't need LOS for either ). And hopefully not too juicy of a target...
The Tech-Priest Auxillia unit would now stand back near the 2 Krios and Thanatar and be ready to make two repairs per turn on a 2+ roll. I didn't put in a Cortex Controller since the Thanatar ideally wouldn't be within 12" of any enemy unit to trigger his Target Priority programmed behavior. Other tweaks: Added an Arc Scourge to the Arlatax since he's my main (only!?) CC threat, squeezed in a Tarantula Sentry Gun for even MOAR AP3, changed one Thallax unit to have Tank Hunter since I actually seem pretty light on anti-tank, and shaved off a few Adesc to make the points work.
What do you guys think of the list overall? Does the transport make more sense now? I feel like I'm light on troops, but super shooty . Thoughts very welcome!
So after a looooong hiatus I have moved, and am now local to a 30K group! I also had most of my Mechanicum painted up by Nerdfest in the interim and so am trying to put together a 2000 point list (to which I could add my Knight Atropos if someone wanted to play 2500).
Here's what I was thinking. Very open to revisions / feedback!
Edit: Spoilering my original list, scroll down to my next post for the new list
I have some questions, mostly regarding the Tech-Priest Auxillia and the Myrmidon Destructors:
- I read about a way to make the Tech-Priest Auxillia unit Relentless, which would let me equip the servos with Multimeltas, by attaching a relentless Magos. Does this actually work / how does one do this??? Right now the unit feels a bit pointless, so I'd definitely shuffle things around to give them Multimeltas if this works somehow
- Also regarding that unit, does the Tech-Priest need a Cortex Controller? How problematic is having only one in the back of the army going to be for the Vultarax and Arlatax? Should I just scrap this idea completely and run them as Scyllax instead? (These are actually the models I'm using, as I prefer them over the servo-automata models and they look very similar)
- I don't see how the Myrmidon Destructors will live to shoot, since they don't seem that survivable and are such an attractive target for the enemy to shoot at. Is the way I've equipped them good, and how do you use them? I could also put them in the Triaros instead, or just drop them entirely to buff up all the other units (like making a real Scyllax deathstar and sticking the Magos in there). It does feel like I might have one too many units to equip all the others properly! This would also allow me to split the Krios tanks into two separate squads.
I bought the Mechanicum Taghmata Army List through the Black Library site as a pdf, and was hoping to do the same with Horus Heresy Book 6 - Retribution.
But I can't find it on their site . Am I blind or do they not offer the full Horus Heresy books as pdfs / iBooks for purchase on there? That seems crazy with shipping costs for the books from the UK, so I hope I'm just missing something!
Thanks I'm going to go for it! Actually preordered the Vultarax today, just love how it looks
On the Magos Dominus, the rule looks like the opposite to me - that you can ignore the character if you want. Maybe made to prevent a character from soaking incoming fire with an invul save, or just for fluff purposes, since an enemy should be able to target the big creature standing behind them? Part of it reads:
"...enemy shooting at the unit may opt to ignore the fact that the character is the closest model in the unit for the purposes of shooting attacks if they wish and instead target the closest Monstrous Creature in the unit..."
So, it looks to me like they can ignore the character if he's the closest, but not the MC. I certainly hope so, since joining them up doesn't seem very useful otherwise!
Thanks for the great input on the Thallax, guys! I've also thought about the Archmagos and realized if I go lighter on him I can add a whole extra tank so what do you think about the below:
Right now, I removed Destructor and added Meltabombs to the smaller Thallax units, but could use those 30 points for anything that made the most sense
I went with a foot Magos who would join the Thanatar as a unit. I think if I keep him back behind the big guy a bit, the Thanatar will soak all the incoming fire as the closest model, right? A master-crafted conversion beamer is everything I ever wanted in a game of 40k. And going with the Magos Dominus means he has the Cortex Controller natively, saving me even more points since the Tech-priest doesn't need it. And I added in a whole extra Krios Venerator with the points saved!
Any final thoughts appreciated, I'm going to be ordering the vehicles soon so if you see a huge hole speak now!
I might try mixing up the Thallax units a bit more, could folks post how they configure their units? I've found some old threads on it but would love to hear what people are using in practice!
Ah, you're right on the typo - I've fixed it now! I was operating under an old Tank Hunter rule but rerolling armor penetration still seems good. Thanks very much for the answers, I've crossed off the answered questions above . On the power weapon, that's a great suggestion and I'll go with a power axe, as well!
Have people tried a large unit of Thallax with Chainblades? The Cortex Controller doesn't seem too necessary on the Tech-Priest, given that the Thanatar will usually be more than 12" away from enemies, anyway. If I drop that and Destructor from the unit, I can give them all Chainblades, so that they're insta-killing T4 models in close combat (thanks to Rad grenades on the Magos). I'm not sure how many multi-wound T4 models I'll be facing, though
Do I have the Tech-Priest rule right - that with Enginseer, they get +1 to Battlesmith rolls in addition to the +1 that comes from the servo-arm (so need to roll a 3+)?
Well nerdfest is working his magic and the 500 points are almost done and it has gone well enough that I'm considering expanding to a full army. I could really use input on the below!
HQ Archmagos Prime - Myrmidax, 2 x Phased Plasma Fusils, Jet pack, Rad grenades - 225
Heavy Thanatar Siege-Automata - 250
Krios Venerator - 150
Lord of War Cerastus Knight-Atropos - 435
Total - 2000
Thoughts on the list It seems to me that Destructor (Tank Hunter) on the Thallax is a really good way of hedging my bets - I'd like for the plasma guns to be shooting marines, but if there aren't troops in range, the small units can put out 2 S7 and 3 S6 shots on a tank, all rerolling armor penetration - not bad! I'm not sure if it's as needed on the large unit, as I had planned that unit to accompany the Magos, and he really wants to be shooting infantry.
On the Magos, he's upgraded so he can fire 2 weapons, and with Relentless should be putting out 6 S6 AP3 shots a turn. Combined with 6 more of those shots from the large Thallax unit he's with, they should really erase marine units (which there are a lot of in 30K!). He's expensive, and I considered splitting this unit into two smaller ones, as it will likely be a real fire magnet with over 500 points represented in it... but they are a scary shooting unit as they are, and should actually be a decent in combat with his Rad grenades letting them wound T4 models on a 2+!
I had also wanted to find room for some anti-air Tarantula gun platforms, but couldn't fit them with the expensive Magos. Does the list look like it has enough AA as it is with just the Vultarax? Any other ideas on different ways to configure the units I've shown here?
Rules Questions These are now answered in the posts below
Spoiler:
1. Am I reading the rules for the Magos right, he has Lumbering Advance from Myrmidax but also a Jet Pack. So, he can't make a Run move or a Sweeping Advance due to Lumbering Advance, but he should still be able to perform his Jet Pack moves along with the Thallax, right? (i.e. jump-shoot-jump)
2. For the Tech-Priest unit with the Enginseer option, it says "Adepts gain +1 to Battlesmith rolls and are each equipped with a servo-arm. Servo-automata in the unit gain the Servo-automata Support special rule". The first sentence means the Adept gains +1 for Enginseer AND +1 for the servo-arm, right, so they're rolling Battlesmith on a 3+? If this is right, only one servo-automata needs a servo-arm upgrade to make it a 2+... but if I'm reading it wrong, I'd need two, so wanted to check.
3. Does a Cyber-Occularis interact with a Thanatar Siege-Automata in a way I'm not seeing? I saw people talking about the two working together, and maybe it has something to do with Barrage rules I'm not aware of...
4. Finally, where in the world are the rules for the Phased Plasma-Fusil in the Mechanicum red book? I just cannot find them anywhere, I had to google for them. Just need a page number! Also, I believe the Jet packs on the Thallax and the Jet pack / Relentless on the Magos means they should all be able to fire the 3 Salvo shots from these, right?
I decided to start with getting 500 points together, beginning with the Knight Atropos and a Tech-priest Auxillia with 4 Servo-automata. I'm using converted Scyllax on 32mm bases for the the Servo-automata . I also know this isn't really legal to run in any FOC just yet, but I can ally in the Knight to 40K armies if needed.
Nerdfest is going to work on these for me, and I'll post up a link when they're underway
I like your lists, thanks guys . And I think you're right zed, what I had in mind is probably more appropriate for the next book. It's a very cool army, and I'm surprised at how varied builds can be even with the current options!
For Lords of War when running under 2K - does Matrix of Ruin allow this, or is there absolutely no way to run that Knight at 1850? If it's not allowed under any circumstances below 2K that torpedos the army right there!
Hmm, yeah I guess not wanting to take too many tanks and Ordo Reductor don't mix
What I really like is the Knight and a bunch of Thallax, supported by a few Krios. Something like:
Magos with Scyllax bodyguard (possibly Calleb Decima)
15 Thallax (not sure if 5 units is best, or some larger units - with one small one getting the skyfire upgrade?)
2 Krios Venator
Knight-Atrapos
Tech-priest Auxillia (seems important to repair the Knight's weapons?)
I think that should come out to somewhere around 2000 depending on upgrades, and I'd also like to be able to run it at 1850. It's just that there's so many crazy options on how to equip things that I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around it!
----
Took me so long to type that that I got ninja'ed by Ankhalagon by 40 minutes! See what I posted here, I think this is a clearer picture of what I want to make a list around
Okay guys, I have the Mechanicum book (and the Knight!) but Really need some guidance! I think I've narrowed down that I'd like to take the following for an Ordo Reductor army list:
Basically I need help figuring out how to make the above into an army list, that doesn't totally suck and plays well. I think a knight backed up by a few tanks looks good, with Thallax jumping around and shooting and maybe a single unit of Usarax and Domitar just to mix things up? Obviously steering clear of most of the siege-automata, but I don't want to go TOO tank heavy, and don't mind the look of the Domitar if it's decent (although I don't think it is from my rules reading so far!).
Any advice or links to other threads with similar lists is greatly appreciated!!
Well the reason for the poke is I don't actually know what books things are located in - I'm interested in this sticky from the perspective of a 30K newbie
I don't think there's any rush, just didn't want it to fall off the radar in case you'd forgotten
Nice! It would probably make sense to edit that link and the one for the main book into the bottom of the OP. What do you think, ArbitorIan? I'll add it on if you don't get to it
Frozocrone wrote: Is there anything planned for sub forums of 30k or are you going to see how this does before making the call?
For now, the plan is just to see how a single forum goes - things like background don't make sense to split out, because they're the same for 40K and 30K, of course . If interest was really high, eventually there might be a separate list forum or the like, but for now let's just see how much interest one forum generates
Will pass on the appreciation to the man behind the curtain (legoburner) and yakface who made this happen!
