I've been waiting for Court of Two to drop since The Other Side existed Also trying to power myself up to mobilize my Gibbering pledge and slap some paint on it. I've never played TOS and I'm not sure when I ever will, but I really like the rules and frankly it's the game I would have started playing instead of Malifaux after The Old World was nuked from orbit.

Cool! That's good to know, I appreciate the freedom. Seems like the thing to do is mind your synergies and (ideally) shoot for some variety, and I don't totally understand the sideboard bit yet but guessing that's a lil' bit of extra on demand variety to counter various nasties.

Dark Age Crü:
My interest in DA has grown enough to consider choosing a faction for reals and making some lists purely based on cool models, however I'm not sure what the requirements for a warband are. I know where to find the availability on a card ([X] 500 type of thing), and I get the sub-faction limits on some factions (Skarrd and the cults, for example), but I'm wondering what I'm missing generically. Like, do I have to have a unit with Commander? Or is that just a good thing in terms of activations in game? Is there a minimum model count, like 3+ or so? I checked out the 'how to get started' section in the rules but not sure I saw much beyond playing to the same points level.
Thanks!

+1 to GMG's MFX vids, both enjoyable and educational You might also check out: Beyond the Beard (loads of reports between the same ~3 dudes) Rough Riders Wargaming (not a ton of reports yet but comprehensive reviews of the new book) Wargaming For Fun (more or less same 2 dudes throwing down as they learn the game) Kasual / Nerdhammer (just the one quality report so far but promise of more to come) YMMV on these guys, but I tend to devour batreps when getting into a game, so am not too picky - though I do like the looooong format that most MFX batreps indulge in - Salvage

That is precisely how I feel about my own S&L box Originally I've been wanting to sell it off - because I don't want to play Levy - but you know, maybe I'll build it out. Rusty is pretty damn pimp ...

That was a followup question, in regards to manipulative. Related to all of these things, when would you take a Terrifying (X) test for a Furious, Rapid or Flurry action? Only when you go to actual use the first of three attak actions? Or put another way, do these 2 Actions have a target? Guessing no? Besides talking about keeping the same target for all three 1 Actions. - Salvage

danp164 wrote:2. I'm fairly certain you would randomise for each attack as each attack is a separate action not contingent on the results of the previous, in this case, the single target would be the engagement itself.
Does it matter that Furious Casting is a Tactical Action, and the triple blasty parts are Attak Actions?

Played my fourth game last night, and had a couple things come up that we couldn't quite solve addressing the rulebook: 1) Lazarus is fighting Yin, a Terrifying (All) thing, in melee. He takes a horror duel to stab her and fails, and is unable to cheat to pass. We played that his activation immediately ended and he gained the Paralyzed condition, which he had to use his next activation to get rid of - at which point Laz just activated, removed the token, and we moved to another model to activate. Is that how failing a horror duel works? It seemed particularly harsh to lose essentially two turns off of one flip taken outside of the terrifying thing's activation. 2) Librarian goes to use Furious Casting against an Illuminated engaged with a Freikorpsman. She discards a card to get her triple CA actions, randomizes onto the Illuminated, passes her Terrifying (10) with ease, and we duel out the first CA attak to 1 wound or so. Does her next CA attak need to randomize? We played that it did not, due to the specific "against a single target" of Furious Casting, however the rules seem to suggest that the "temporary target" used when targeting an engaged model might qualify as the "single target" that FC wants. This would obviously apply more often to Rapid Fire, as not all CA have gun icons (though the Libby's does). - Salvage

str00dles1 wrote:Are they worth getting for him for a big hitter or best to stick with the swarmy kind of feel?
I have a feeling the answer to both sides of that question is: Yes Somebody else can tell you about the Students, but you'd essentially get it to summon the one that best kills what you're fighting. Watched a local Nico game where he Laughed up some Mindless Zombies, but really only to summon a Student of Viscera to do horrible things to Neverborn things. So there's both kits - zombs + students - in action! - Salvage

If you're interested in getting raw point value out of your crew box, GMorts has been keeping track of the totals per box: http://gmortschaotica.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/m2e-starter-set-soulstone-values.html The crews you listed in the OP stack up like so: Her: Molly 22/26/32 Tara 27/30/37 Dreamer 23/27/39 Kaeris 21/24/29 Rasputina 25/29/36 Me: Sonnia 27/31/38 Lucius 31/34/40 Nicodem 33/36/44 Ironsides 32/34/40 Misaki 31/36/42 Reading that as crew cost, then adding max soulstones, then adding max upgrades that come in the box. Clearly not the best way to choose your starting force, but if you're new, on the fence and want to limit your immediate purchases, it can help. I'll second the advice to choose a master from a faction that you like other masters in. Malifaux rewards having breadth in one faction, and you will want to mess around with other masters, if you don't already And it also became clear to me pretty quickly that you're meant to buy the starter box then an obligatory smaller box of thematically related dudes, both to help the master get their schtick on and to hit 50 points (in many cases, others simply become functional 35-40 SS crews). - Salvage

Groovy, I thought as much, but really know nothing about the rat part of Outcasts Still a little surprised every time I hear about a Transmortis thing hitting the table, I keep thinking they're campaign-only.

FYI Hamelin's new box hits at GenCon this weekend, and then September 25th on general release (at least in the US): While technically a story encounter (special scenario thing?), I have a feeling that the upcoming Brotherhood of the Rat may find itself into Hamelin crews as well, either counting as things or in more official form: There's also a general upgrades deck coming out, which will have the faction upgrade cards you may or may not want - you don't need the cards, but they provide an easy reference that might help if you own the books but don't want to lug around. Probably cheaper than picking up both wave 1 and 2 Outcast arsenal decks: - Salvage

tomjoad wrote:So, obviously, it depends on what faction you like, what you like the look of, blah blah blah...
Yea, I would look across the rest of those crews' factions and see if there isn't another crew or good handful of models you wouldn't mind expanding into after this first box. Or you could do like my buddy and just buy all the crews you like, because the price is right I feel like Hoffman has the least in common with the rest of his faction, Ophelia the most (but you gotta like gremlins ), and Von Schill somewhere in the middle. He's most likely to use Freicorps peeps but can get some mileage out of other Outcast weirdos. - Salvage

Those feels. Over the last month I've spent $100+ on Malifaux, with no realistic expectation of playing the game any time soon Honestly I just wanted cool minis to hobby on and a neat game to think about as I wait endlessly for WHFB 9E to hurtle into the scene.
And if 9E is the stinker it may well be? I'll have Malifaux ready to go

xbenblasterx wrote:Lastly I've been browsing the models online and couldn't find a specific 'starter box' is there one?
Not sure if this question was answered, peeps kept saying 'starter box' a lot, but they don't mean it like 40k, Fantasy or now WM/H have boxes with rules and two opposing forces of models in them. They're talking about crew boxes, those sets of six models that cost like $35-45 (USD) and are from the same faction, and often connected in other synergistic ways in game. As suggested, get yourself a crew box, another box or two of things in the same faction, a fate deck and the mini rule book and you'll be good for pretty big games. I'm actually just getting into Malifaux myself too, and a month or so ago I decided to go with Ten Thunders after being pretty sure I was going with Neverborn Anyway, to start I ordered up: Rail Crew (Mei Feng's box) + Rail Golem + Metal Gamin + Fate Deck (nabbed an old school version for cheap) + Mini-Rules Which gives me 50ss in models without any upgrades, and a pretty smashy crew to get going with ... ... but then I started to get ahead of myself and bought Yin ... and Ten Thunders Bros ... and Ama No Zako ... and preordered the Brewmaster crew And I have yet to build a single MF model, let alone play a game! I blame GeeDub for not telling me what's happening with Fantasy so I can spend my hobby moneys there EDIT -- Ninja'd! Good stuff from Purifier - Salvage
