Just finished my first full blown space opera!
As a long time fantasy reader I won't lie about struggling a bit with the fictive science at moments, but luckily Brin doesn't spend much time on this. As soon as I got my mind around that neo-chimpanzees and neo-dolphins aren't any more far fetched than elves and dwarves I ended up really enjoying myself with these stories. I'm looking forward to reading more about the Earthlings, particularly the destiny of the spaceship Streaker

"Startide Rising
I've been reading fantasy for most of my life and am just lately trying to get into sci-fi. This one came recommended by a friend and is my first full blown space opera. I found the plot a bit slow moving in the beginning, but it sure picked up it's pace for an explosion of an (open!) ending, quite the nail biter! Hopefully some answers will be forthcoming in The Uplift War"
