I need the sequel, and I don't know what to do without it D:

Whew, this sure was an adventure! I really enjoyed following Kit on her journey, as well as a lot of the supporting characters. It was brutal, honest and raw, it doesn't shy away from some really tough subjects and I really appreciated that about the book. I think that the characters and their mental illnesses were treated with a lot of respect, and for the most part, these characters weren't villainised either.

The audiobook was a great way to consume the story (Jason Segel is the narrator) and really brought the characters to life. The story itself could be quite predictable but I did really enjoy the time spent exploring the realms of Otherworld, the scope and limitations of the game, the children etc. The VR element was the most fascinating element of this book to me, especially one aspect of it that made it stand out from other games.
Simon makes for an interesting main character. I did appreciate a lot of his flaws and I found myself laughing at a lot of the humorous things he said/did. But he could also be very aggravating and unlikeable, namely during a scene early on where he threatens two of his classmates, saying he will leak nude photos of them in response to them calling Kat, Simon's best friend, a slut. This was *SO* not okay. I can see the message that was supposed to be conveyed here, but it was very poorly handled.
The last thing I want to mention was that I felt like the ending stopped almost mid-scene. I don't think that finishing a book (especially the first in a series) with questions still unanswered, or with some setup for the events in the next book, is an issue at all... but the way it ended wasn't very satisfying, it felt incomplete. It wasn't quite the same as a cliffhanger, but the characters are literally embarking on their next journey when it... ends. ...more
This book threw my heart through several hoops, dropping it a few times and trampling all over it. I need some time to recover, but I WHAT. AN. ENDING.

My favourite thing about this book was some of the new characters we meet, especially Sturmhond! I was also a little sad we didn't see quite as much of the Darkling, he is such an interesting character....more

It's hard to believe that there can be even more action after Red Rising, but lo and behold! My heart breaks for these characters... they have loved and lost so much, but they just keep on fighting for what they believe is right.
It was great spending more time with this crew, and meeting some fantastic new characters, too! I love Darrow's brain - he comes up with the most clever, and often crazy, plans, and it was so much fun (yet stressful) seeing them unfold.
