Travel across the diverse state of Alabama and meet its famous sons and daughters, from legendary football coach Bear Bryant to the remarkable Helen Keller and civil rights activist Rosa Parks. Visit landmarks such as the Bellingrath Home, or stop by Landmark Park and see how a farm was run in the 1890s. Written in the popular two-tier format for the "Discover America State by State" series, with simple rhymes for younger children and expository text for older children, "Y is for Yellowhammer" is a delightful tour of the state of Alabama.
Y is for Yellowhammer by Carol Crane is a nonfiction informational book about people, places, and things in Alabama. The book utilizes the alphabet to point out the various people, places, and things in Alabama. I enjoyed the book because I learned quite a few new things about the stay I live in- ALabama. I think the book is very relevant and could be used for social studies connection lessons in the classroom as well as exposure for the lower grade levels to the alphabet and things that are relevant to their culture of living in Alabama.
This is a lovely alphabet book that shows wonders from all over our state. The art work is very pretty. I found it to be more engaging than a regular alphabet book. This is a great way to expose your kids to the alphabet through things they may recognize. If they don't it sparks a great conversation about their state. Loved this alphabet book!
You can stick with the simple letter statements and read through the book at a young child's level. But longer blocks of text offer greater insight into Alabama history.
This is a good book for people of all ages to learn about Alabama! It features poems for preschoolers, more information for older readers, and a quiz with additional information at the end!
We love this book at my house. Carol Crane has a few books out now that use the alphabet to teach about a chosen state. I was happy to share it with neighbor kids that enjoyed it also.
