DARK JEM—PART 2! Something's making SYNERGY go haywire—and it spreads to JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS just as they gear up for their biggest challenge yet—touring with THE MISFITS! Meanwhile, THE MISFITS introduce their new lead singer... BLAZE! And just wait until PIZZAZZ finds out!
KELLY THOMPSON has a degree in Sequential Art from The Savannah College of Art & Design. Her love of comics and superheroes have compelled her since she first discovered them as a teenager. Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.
Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. Other major credits include: A-Force, Captain Marvel & The Carol Corps, Jem and The Holograms, Misfits, Power Rangers Pink, and the creator-owned mini-series Mega Princess.
Kelly's ambitions are eclipsed only by her desire to exist entirely in pajamas. Fortunately pajamas and writers go hand in hand (most of the time). Please buy all her stuff so that she can buy (and wear) more pajamas.
Strong start to this arc, but (just my opinion) this second part felt weak.
Still a great series overall, and a labor-of-love from writer and artists, and near the top of my monthly Pull-List.
As a totally unrelated aside, I actually ended up picking up the "Jem" Complete Series DVD set, since it was cheap AND I had some coupons. Here's hoping it lives up to my memories....
This isn't the cute, technicolor Jem and the Holograms. This is the gothic, death metal 'turn that music down' Jem and the Holograms. Even The Misfits are confused. Poor Stormer, she has no idea what the hell happened to her Kimber, and she's not happy at all.
Meanwhile, Blaze has nailed the audition to replace Pizzazz as the lead vocalist for The Misfits. It's everything she's ever wanted, save she has a secret. Sorry for the spoiler, but it's not like a big deal (and if it is, you need a life). Blaze is trans. She reveals her secret to Clash, who's still bummed that she didn't make the cut, but she's not about to be petty. I loved The Misfits reaction to Blaze's announcement. They were like, okay but are you punctual?
Speaking of Pizzazz, she's in a pretty lonely place right now, but never count her out.
I totally dig the art, especially the new Jem and the Holograms look. Jem's killer spider web heels had me salivating. I need those! Shana's short buzz cut with the purple streak slayed so freaking hard.
Really interested in this Dark Jem story line. My comic book guy ordered me different covers based on what he thinks I'll like, so I bounce from regular to subscription to special edition. The subscription cover for this one is haunting.
Jem and the Holograms have gone to the dark side and everyone's confused by their new look and new attitude. Their love interests are spurned. Pizzazz is still injured so her band goes on tour without her, and it's absolutely heartbreaking to see her sitting lonely with her back to her front door as Stormer says goodbye.
Those are all interesting, fun concepts in this comic. But what I didn't like is that The Misfits have a new lead singer. I'm happy a trans character was introduced into the series, but it's senseless for them to have created an original character when there are dozens of wonderful canon characters that could have been trans and/or could have joined The Misfits. What about Graphix? Blaze is way too nice to be a Misfit. She doesn't fit. The author is just stroking her own ego with Blaze's introduction, as evidenced by all the patting on the back she gives herself in the comic series extras. Not a fan. This is where the series as a whole started going south for me.
Oh, and guess what? Yet two more characters has shaved her heads: Clash and Shana. Are we up to six now? The artist keeps getting lazier and lazier with the hair. Why bother making them have such beautiful, unique hairstyles in the beginning if you were just going to make them all bald after a dozen issues?
I know there was a little backlash about the way the comic handled Blaze outing herself to the group. But I thought it was lovely. Like the women's sexuality there was just total acceptance and no comment needed. I understood why she did it and loved how it ended up not being a big deal. This comic is full of queer acceptance and story lines. Every time I read one I feel the little girl in me grow happier and feel more accepted. I love that there are queer girls out there who are reading this and can identify with it. Plus the dark Jem outfits are just GORGEOUS! Can I have them all please? The scene with the crowd at the end was terrifying. Fantastic series.
The Dark Jem story continues as the Holograms are caught up in the goth makeover/brainwashing, making them apathetic jerks in amazing outfits. Sophie Campbell's art style has changed up but is at its best when the bands are performing.
In the B-story, Blaze gets her gig, but then is afraid to reveal to the misfits that she's trans. It's a beautiful and sweet scene that's also a great character moment for Clash who a) has just failed an audition that b) her best friend got, but she handles it in a way that makes me want to hug them both. Well done all.
This arc is still in the building stages, but it's coming along nicely. There's a very delicate sense of dread, too, with the Dark Jem story, which is great to see. This book is doing all sorts of amazing things, and I love it.
I am enjoying the Dark Jem saga so far. I really like how they look. I just wish they'd not act the way they do towards others, sometimes.
I especially enjoyed Blaze's scene of "coming out" to the Misfits about being transgendered. They took it real well, and were not worried about it at all.
I despise Jem's look as Dark Jem, the others pull their look off quite well. Jem looks like she's been dipped in oil. Other than that, the story is awesome and addicting.
