SAGA IS BACK!
And I'm not sure I care anymore.
I feel bad because this was that graphic novel that I would shove at people who didn't like graphic novels and tell them to just give it a chance.
I don't know if it's the years-long hiatus, the lack of Marko, or just the loss of seeing a realistic marriage playing out in a fantasy setting, but this story doesn't tug at my heart the same way that it used to.
I just finished this volume and I'm struggling because none of it really made an impression on me.
I don't know. Maybe because Hazel has this weird narration style that is starting to grate on my nerves.
She'll say that being on this ship was the best time she ever had - flash forward to the actual story and she was there for a couple of days and learned how to (maybe) play the guitar or something?
It's just...
She makes these big declarations in the narration that seem overblown in retrospect. Like every little thing is supposed to be special, but the reality is that we've all been to Chuck E. Cheese with our kids and none of us threw our heads back and orgasmed because the kids were having a good time playing air hockey. <--ya know?

Don't get me wrong, I'll more than likely read the next volume when it comes out. I mean, I'm nowhere near so fickle that I'd give up that easily. But if I said I wasn't disappointed, I wouldn't be truthing.

Ahhhh, Saga. That crazy graphic novel series that gets you hooked on wonderful characters and relationships and crazy-creepy-weird stuff — just to brutally rip it all away. Because nothing is sacred to Brian K. Vaughan. Apparently.
And it’s impossible not to keep coming back for more.
Saga is better for me in full volumes rather than single issues, even if it takes longer (yeah, I know, fans had a THREE year wait before it came back, but hey, I’m impatient so even 10 months is a LOT). It’s great to see a few new storylines starting to develop, although nothing will replace that almost surreal experience of binge-inhaling the previous 9 volumes over one feverish week. But no way I’m waiting for 10 years to read the full story, so volumes will have to do.
This is a quieter “bridge” volume, setting up the story threads back in motion after 3 years in-universe hiatus. Hazel is exponentially cuter. Brobot is ridiculously adorable, and any moments that these two share on-page, accompanied by snarky yet wistful narration of adult Hazel, are simply wonderful.
It’s still irreverent and sometimes crude, and at other times heartbreakingly and seriously poignant in fragile moments of happiness. Our little makeshift family has weathered pains and losses and tragedies, and yet whatever remains of it is still going strong.
And that artwork. Love it.
And yes, I still need a copy of “Assassins of Sadness” by Fartbox. Whoever finds it in this vast crazy universe, please send me a link.

I'm afraid that magic is gone from this graphic novel series. For me, at least. I loved the first 9 volumes, but then the author decided to take a break from it. That hiatus took 4 years and then I lost another 2 until I read this. Saga 1 was my first graphic novel and I have warm feeling towards it. However, I think I am done with the series. True, I haven't read any graphic novel in years so i might have moved away from the genre. I am not sure this is the problem, though. I was underwhelmed by how things ended up for my favourite runaways. I was hoping things to become more epic but no. Also, the new characters were..meh.

After the devastating conclusion of volume Nine, we graph a rocky road to recovery, narrated, as always, by our darling mixed-species girl Hazel. As with life for most people, there’s a new and constantly evolving family reconfiguration after a Major Life Event. Now that the individual episodes have been bound together, I reread this arc as a total unit and I have to say that might be the better way to go. I really enjoyed this issue as a whole, it’s sort of a rebuilding arc that picks up after a few year gap to match the gap we all waited between issues, introduces a lot of new characters, and begins to push the story in a new direction. Which can be a bit cumbersome for many in terms of enjoyment as it takes a moment to really get a foothold into some of this. Personally, I’m excited about it all. Hazel has grown considerably and the story is starting to shift from the adults to this new, younger generation lost in space amidst warfare and other violence. There is a lot of great high points in this issue, from Hazel learning to play music (I love all the scenes with the volatile bandmates), Alana just trying to scrape by and being as badass as ever, a cute new direction for Squire, and the way it cycles back through a lot of characters we haven’t seen in awhile to reestablish where everything is at. Sure. this one doesn’t hit with the biggest action plot of all the issues. It takes its time to stretch the legs of the new narrative arc, but it is something I am certainly looking forward to watching grow.
This is the rebuilding year. Which I think is often looked at as something negative, like, things will be rocky because it is ‘rebuilding’. But I always think back to when I entered High School and joined the Cross Country team, which has recently graduated almost all of it’s varsity members and was almost half new members. It was the rebuilding year, our coach kept saying. But instead of really worrying about wins or losses, he kept the focus on, well, building. The thing I remember most about that year was how much emphasis on fun and camaraderie there was. Because rebuilding isn’t just about finding your footing, but it’s also about experimenting and finding something new, and I think that is what this issue does well.
It is sad to see many great characters go, but I am excited to get to know these new ones as well. This was worth the wait. I read each episode as they came out, which was a bit rough as so much of it felt too bitesized to really latch on. Reading it as one big issue made it feel much smoother and really take hold. I wish I could tell you I'd wait until the next full issue to read it again knowing this, but I can't. I know damn well the moment an episode goes live I will instantly gobble in up and bask in my joy and regret. Oh! And in case you were worried, this issue does not let you down and delivers a massive emotional blow right at the end. Because BKV wouldn’t let us wait for the next one with good feelings, would he?

I felt like there were so many shock value things in this, and I disliked each one. But I still adore Hazel and Alana, and I wish I could give them the whole universe that they deserve. And their depiction of trauma and grief was really heartbreaking but really powerful. But the end did break me, I am not gonna lie.

I would like to say that a break of a few years would make me more inured to trauma, but it just isn't so. I'm so invested in Saga, with its revolving-door characters, its truly tragic foreshadowing and its drop-kick reveals, that I will keep coming back for more and more abuse.
Why do I keep coming back? Because I love them and I love it. I feel like I'm a part of the family and there are just no two ways about it. You don't abandon family.
And then, I just went up in flames again. God damn it!

“Then here’s to our other halves on the other side.”
I delayed reading this for an additional ten months because I wanted to hold onto the hope that what had happened last time wasn’t permanent. These four years would have passed and it would have been a fluke. A horrific nightmare we all experienced that Vaughan would mercifully reverse to save our poor hearts.
I should have known better.
Instead, what I get is a three year time skip and more heartache. Years have passed but you can tell our favorite dysfunctional family is still not handling grief well. Don’t worry, Marko has not been replaced nor will he ever be (Alana makes that very clear). She’s just trying to live her life now and be the best mom she can be with Hazel and Squire. She’s still got people coming for her left and right though. People want Hazel dead. She is living proof that their fucking people don’t have to fight an endless war and can, in fact, live in peace together. They don’t want that though. They want to fucking win, and they’ll do whatever it takes.
So you know what? Fuck the Will. I had a modicum of sympathy for this man until he did what he did. Fuck Gwendolyn for giving zero fucks about a man she once loved and desecrating his memory by . And fuck Gale because if this man tries to kill fucking Ghüs I swear I will never read Saga again. You hear me Brian K. Vaughan?! If you kill Ghüs it is over!!! Marko was hard enough. I will not put myself through that torture again!!
I so wish that we could have Marko back. I am never going to stop wishing for that. And that ending was cruel and hurt my fucking soul because how dare you take away one of the few things they had left of him. The only place they had any concrete memories. How fucking dare you.
This was less of a review and more of a rant and I’m sorry for that, but Saga always brings out the emotions in me. I guess that means Vaughan is doing his job but dammit I’m tired of hurting!! Staples’ gorgeous art kinda helps but also not really. Please just gimme something happy in this damn series. Let them be fucking happy 😭

It feels good to be back.
After the dramatic and traumatic events of previous volumes it perhaps wasn’t that bad of an idea for this series to go on hiatus. Although I’m really not sure it had to be THREE YEARS!
Anyways, quite some time has passed for our little family as well and it’s good to see them having moved on, kind of. New plot threads are set into motion in this tenth volume and the typical Saga feeling is already back. It’s still snarky, quirky, occasionally adorable, often irreverent and a bit shameless while being emotionally gripping, especially in its quieter moments.
The crucial thing for future volumes will be whether Vaughan and Staples are able to build up their new characters in such a way that they can evoke the same feelings in us as the ones we have lost along the way.

Saga is back, and I thought I would be more excited about that, but it's more of the same as the story jumps a few years, reflecting the years since the last volume appeared here in the real world.
Interesting people move around the page, saying and doing interesting things for the most part, but I have to admit that I'm wondering a bit about the point of it all now and where this is going and how much longer it's going to take to get there and how much more loss Hazel and us readers can endure.
Here's hoping I get swept back up into the story as it starts to come out regularly (I hope) again.

There aren’t enough words to describe the journey that is Saga. It’s our first taste of the world in such a long time and it’s the first time we see everyone following the tragic events of volume 9. Honestly, I was super excited to be back in this world but I forgot how dark it is! I’m excited to follow Hazel as she continues to get older, but I know it’s going to be a rough journey. The artwork was stunning as usual. While there aren’t any moments that were as emotionally charged as volume 9, this particular installment does make way for addressing the grief that every single character is experiencing. Wonderful read!

I definitely liked this a lot more when reading the issues in one combined volume as opposed to month-by-month releases. I initially was pretty annoyed by the time skip but it’s grown on me—my one complaint is that I wish we saw more of the side characters from the original nine volumes as Petrichor (my favorite surviving character), Upsher, Ghüs, and Sophie were all absent from this issue and I really wanted to see where their stories had gone.

So here we are! I had already gone ahead and read Saga #55 back when it came out, but I don't like reading issues so I stopped and waited for volume 10 to come out.
We're of course back with Hazel, her adopted brother Squire, and her mother. And one addition. They are traveling thrugh space in their trusted tree rocketship, the last of its kind thanks to all the war-waging imbeciles. They are also trying to pass as human (hiding their wings and Squire's royalty) and living a life on the straight-and-narrow. Which isn't easy since everyone is so corrupt and they are STILL being hunted.
Here, we see to what lengths parents till go in order to protect their kids. But we also see a certain mercenary, the lying cat, and agents from all sides of the war and what they are all up to.
Yes, there is sex again as well as really crass threats. However, it's not quite as ramped up (again? yet?).
I really don't know how I feel about the story so many years after I read volume 9. In fact, when asked by my buddy-reader, who got seriously compromised emotionally, I actually told him that the story was good but left me pretty cold.
And then the very last thing in this volume happened and I teared up. My stomach didn't drop out and I didn't yell like when Marko ... you know. It nevertheless hit me like a hammer .

After the trauma that was volume 9, this is more of a reflection on grief, emotions and healing after loss. We see Hazel and Co trying to move on, doing the best they can with the circumstances they find themselves in. All while trying to be a family. Which is pretty hard when everyone wants to kill you.

Dude, I don’t even know how to rate Saga anymore (do I “enjoy” reading it or find it exceedingly stressful or both? No one knows!) but I do know that I will follow Hazel literally anywhere, no matter how many times this series rips out my heart!

It took a damned long time, but Brian K. Vaughan/Fiona Staples’s wonderful graphic novel series Saga continues in Volume Ten.
Leaving readers with a shocking and depressing cliffhanger in Volume Nine, Vaughan/Staples continue the story of young Hazel, as narrated by an older Hazel somewhere in an indefinite future. It’s kind of like “A Christmas Story” only with an intergalactic war, alien assassins, space pirates and drug dealers, lots of graphic sex and gratuitous boob shots, robots with TVs for heads, and bootleg baby formula. Oh, and absolutely nothing to do with Christmas.
I’d give a plot synopsis, but honestly if you haven’t read the first nine volumes (and you totally should!), none of it would make sense anyway.
This is still one of my top five favorite graphic novel series of all times, and I hope Vaughan/Staples don’t wait another three fucking years to do the next one.

Usually Saga is a 5-star no-brainer for me but despite the top tier quality art (and occasional insults) this volume left me a little cold after the long hiatus. Perhaps it's because, for me, Marko was a big part of the emotional core of the story and this volume is more than anything else about dealing with his absence? Also the new characters weren't all that fascinating, something I felt even Vaughan himself tacitly admits via one of Hazel's foreshadowing narrations.
But do I stillwant need to know what comes next? You betcha!

Oh no, I'm caught up! I thought I had more volumes available! 😭 well, I guess I have to read other stuff now.
It was nice to see the group again after everything that happened in Volume 9. It was also interesting to learn about the hiatus, which I'm glad I got to skip right over 😆 I'm really looking forward to volume 11. Where do I sign up for updates?
