A deep space freighter with an eclectic crew, including a pilot who specializes in controlled crash landings, an 'almost' doctor who cooks better than most chefs, a deck hand who makes it her life's mission to bully anyone she can, an engineer who is so quiet that you sometimes don't know he's there, and a Captain who is in constant pain from wounds she suffered in an ugly war. Despite their differences, the Celia operates very efficiently, providing both a good income and a home for her crew. Everything is fine, until a good deed exposes them all, in more ways than one.
EXCELLENTLY WRITEN, YOU JUST WON'T BELIEVE HOW GOOD THIS BOOK AND AUTHOR IS!
STORMCROW by N.C. Reed is very well written, intriguing, mind-blowing, and will hold your interest throughout. The cast of characters are well defined and you'll find yourself following through the book feeling as if you were right there within the storyline as the characters travel through space picking up and delivering fright from one world to another.
This book is a story of five crew members of The Celia, an independent freight starship, which have worked together for the past three years and their one passenger heading deep into a small population and poor planet on the far reaches of of the frontier of known space. This book about the relationships and struggles of the crew and their one passenger and even though the story takes place in space and set in the future, it could be for the most part taken place in today's time at most working environments were they work in close proximity for long periods of time. With their passenger on a trip home after finishing her schooling to head home to teach children on her home world that due to their economic state would not be able to obtain a decent education if one at all.
The crew's pass comes known to each other and as some of their past reveals that some of them fought on different sides of the war which recently ended on opposite sides, hidden feelings ranging from hate to love, and it appears that they will be lucky to survive their delivery runs if their friendships can hold up and whether they will kill each other before their run is completed and their passenger is safely delivered home. Everyone has a past, everyone has to deal with their demons, their need for revenge, and their feelings for one and another.
This book is only the second series (but the 15th book) in which I have read that N.C. Reed has written, but I can easily say that his works are quickly becoming some of my most favorite ones that I have come across. Even if you're not interested in science fiction or post-apocalyptic stories, you find that N.C. Reed's books are stories that are much, much more than the genre. They are full of morals, relationships, struggles, loss and gains, and life changing events that shape the characters and engage your mind as well as being entertaining.
I have really enjoyed this first book in the series and hope you, too, will enjoy it.
I also highly recommend reading "Fire From The Sky" series also by N.C. Reed.
Despite its flaws, I love this series. I have a Firefly shaped whole in my heart, and this series helps to fill it. For me, it fits perfectly into that sci-fi/action/comedy niche.
The story is about a ragtag crew aboard the starship Celia, trying to make a living shipping cargo between planets. Despite their best intentions, trouble seems to find them. The fact that multiple members of the crew have a mysterious, hidden past doesn't help on that front.
There are a couple rough bits, plot-wise, in the first half, but they serve to get the characters and story where they need to go. By the midpoint, things have settled and the story continues flawlessly from there.
The series clearly draws some inspiration from Firefly, but is still its own unique story. These books don't get as much notice as Reed's other series, but I think they're just as good.
My only real complaint is that there are too many typos for a book with a publisher. They aren't nearly as bad as what you see in self-published works, but there are enough to throw off your rhythm when reading. Not a fan of the crow and lightning cover, either. It's a nice image, but tells nothing of the story. If you're going to take a cut of the profits from the author, then pull your weight and do more than just run spellcheck.
To @##$$% with Amazon's rating system. This book and it's author rate a whole constellation of stars! There is barely a day I don't check to see if Mr. Reed hasn't published a new book. In some of his comments I get the idea that there is a third Stormcrow novel in the works. I sure hope so. Please don't do what another author did - start a series, do 2 books and then dropped it. In the absence of anything new, ( HINT-HINT) I believe I will re-read Birds of a Feather. here's to a new novel soon thank you Bill Hodges a avid fan
Well, I tried but couldn't finish the book. Really didn't like the characters, particularly the captain. So you have a trained warship captain, who is retired due to injury, with no leadership skills. Maybe, she gets it together later but that does it for me. The author needs to read "No honor in death" by Eric Thomson. Now that's a captain! The whole crew was a soap opera. I hate to come down so hard, have it as 2 star, since I didn't read far. Maybe, it gets better but I really didn't like it.
Massive plot holes, for example, no advancement in medical care? Surely in a future where interstellar travel is common there would be non-addicting pain medication as well as not requiring such primitive methods of measuring depth perception. No calendars? How could you lose 20 years and not find out about it? Poorest examples of a starship captain and security officer I've ever seen.
Fantastic book. Well written. A real page-turner, with twists you don't expect. In addition, there is great character development and evolution. The book does have a sequel and finishes with some loose ends, although it reads well as a stand-alone.
The crew of the freighter Celia are a mixed lot but interesting characters. While delivering freight across the galaxy The deal with complex personal problems while ending a few bad guys.
I don't books like this, but have read the author's other works and thought why not....hooked again! I'm on to book two and will update Like you're mother said "try it you'll like it". Just finished the second book and can hardly wait for the next!!!! What a great story line. NOTE; To author, pound the keys and please keep the series going!!!!!!!!
This is a surprisingly good read. A lot of mystery and plot twists with the characters. Author continues his trend of complex and deep characters that you can get caught up in their stories.
Another good book from this author who spins a fun yarn. Interesting characters, twists, and mystery. I will be looking for the next book in this series.
Really good characters! Much better than some I've read. So, are we going to discover Jessica's secret? Twenty-five years, how did she stay young? A smart person could learn a lot in 25 years.
A good light read, with enough action to keep you engaged. A bit repetitive , so you wont be surprised to find yourself skimming a flippin a few pages here and there.
Excellent start to what I hope will be a long series . Good development of characters the element of mystery added to each character makes for an excellent read
