Simple but good story, immersive and easy to follow. Michael Shanks narrates in first person as Jackson and imitates the other characters convincingly. If you miss Stargate, I heartily recommend - I hope the other installments are also good.

“...for no one to remember the sacrifice this people were making. For an entire reality to blink out of existence. Unknown and unremembered. Suddenly it seemed intolerable and travesty...”

Dear Daniel, I love you so much. My heart bleeds for you.

I think this one was the only/the first audiobook I've listened/finished properly. Audiobooks are great, dont get me wrong. But me? I stay the hell away from them. Usually. Cause I dont like the narrator or dont have for time for them most of the time. This one though? This one I LOVED.

First of all, it's impossible to not like the narrator because he is Micheal Shanks. He has the perfect voice for this so I knew I was at least gonna like listening it. My expectiaons were low so imagine my suprise when I've realized it also had an amazing story.

Everyone was in character. Sam was just there, wasnt around much but Jack even though didnt had many lines was 'there'. I could picture everyone and everything in my head so clearly. The new character -Major Hunter- really worked well with all the other characters -specially with Daniel Jackson.

Second of all, this felt like Stargate. For those who dont know, it is an hour-long "episode" of the show, set during season 3 of Stargate SG-1 before "Fair Game". Not even for one second I didnt feel something was out of place.

Third of all, it has a heartbroken story and a great twist. I highly recommend it to Stargate fans!

This was such a fun listen. It reminded me of an old radio play with some of the sound effects. The story itself was quick, and the aspect of the “gift” of the gods was a fun twist. Worth the listen through. Also, there was a bonus interview at the end which was an unexpected little treat.

This book takes the normal concept of Daniel repeatedly dying and then coming back to life and turns it on its head. I won't say any more about that for fear of spoilers, but this book is a must for anyone who is in any way a fan of Michael Shanks.

PS: Since this is an audiobook, Michael imitates the voices of many of the other main characters is Stargate SG 1. His imitation of a Texas accent is something that must be heard to be believed. :-)

I came across an article yesterday entitled "25 YEARS AGO, A STELLAR SCI-FI SHOW SAVED A BROKEN FRANCHISE — AND CHANGED TV HISTORY", a headline that made me feel insanely old and brought some nostalgia back for something that I had all but moved on from - Stargate SG-1. I used to absolutely love Stargate, I remember renting the 1994 film from Blockbuster Video multiple times, and was absolutely pumped when Showtime aired the "sequel" on July 27, 1997. The show has its ups and downs, especially considering how long it was on, but overall it was a solid bit of sci-fi TV for the better part of 10+ years. Every couple of years somebody mentions that some sort of sequel or reboot is being worked on, and largely nothing has materialized in something like 10-15 years aside from a web-series that I have yet to watch. This got me thinking - "was there any sort of Stargate books or audio adventures on the market?" Something that popular had to have extra material. No sooner did I start looking, then I found out Big Finish Productions, masters of Doctor Who full-cast dramas, had a series of what are basically audiobooks up for grabs.

Big Finish is known for full-cast audio dramas, however this is more of an enhanced audiobook, much like how most of the "bigger" Star Wars audiobooks are formatted. It has music, sound effects and other things that give it that "TV show feel", but the entire thing is performed by Michael Shanks, the actor that played Dr. Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1. While it has been a long time since I've watched the show, I can assume this takes place within the first third of the continuity, sometime before the advent of The Replicators, when the main antagonists were still The Goa'uld and The Jaffa. Shanks does a great job of portraying his former castmates, being used to their mannerisms and speech style, but he doesn't go too far into trying for impersonations. Overall, I enjoyed this, but hope that they get more of the actors involved down the road. I see that more of these were recently greenlit by MGM and Big Finish, so there is hope!

The story itself is not anything too insane, but it is a great re-introduction to the characters, and puts the storyline into an intriguing place for more episodes. Without spoiling too much, the story delves into things like divergent timelines that always make for interesting sci-fi. This doesn't really stand on it's own too much, seeing that it's basically "Episode one" of a series, but it ends in such a way that I definitely want to listen to more. I was able to find this online through my local library, but I think I will probably end up buying these at some point since they have such a good deal right now.

I have never veered too far out of my Doctor Who wheelhouse for Big Finish audio dramas, but this is a nice nod to what else they have to offer. It's just over an hour long, but has almost the same feeling as a couple of episodes of the TV show, which should be the goal of any of these. While this episode just sets the premise up, it will be interesting to see where they go with the plot device they introduce at the end of the story.

The first in a series of original Stargate stories in Big Finish's "Chronicles" style - a first-person narrative read by an actor from the show, with an additional voice actor playing another major part, and sound effects to add to the ambience. This one features Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson, with the guest actor playing a member of SG-12 who proves crucial to the story.

I wasn't expecting too much from this, but it turns out to be a strong outing. Firstly, Shanks does a great job, slipping back effortlessly into the character and also doing a great job of voicing the other members of SG-1 when Daniel has to recount what they were saying - bringing out their mannerisms without trying to do a direct impression. In fact, the whole thing sounds realistic, with Daniel obviously recounting the tale as part of a debrief rather than sounding as if he's narrating a regular audiobook.

But, mainly, it's just a good story. It's set entirely at Stargate Command, opening with Daniel waking up after a mysterious event has robbed everyone at the base of eight hours of their memory and having to piece together what has happened and why. The explanation is something that would have fit beautifully with the TV show and could easily have been one of its episodes - the choice to set the first audio story in the familiar surroundings of the base probably helps here. The characters are written well, and there's a strong theme of the military camaraderie and ethos that underlaid the show. Definitely one to check out if you're a fan of the original.

If you're a fan of Stargate SG-1, you've surely said to yourself, "How many times has Daniel jackson died?" and "I wonder if there's a really cool way for Daniel Jackson to die." Well, I'm here to tell you that nobody really knows the answer to the first (but he beat Jesus fair and square) and this will truly satisfy you for the second. A production of Big Finish audio, and no longer available (legally), this "novella" is performed by a cast of mainly Michael Shanks with music and audio effects (much like what you get with the Star Wars series on Audible). It's very well done and features an interview with Michael Shanks at the end. Sally Malcolm wrote a dang awesome story! Bittorrent your way to this gem if you can find it. You'll be glad you did. Very cool!

Disclaimer: I admit a soft spot for this franchise, which comes with a long and emotional personal history. Which made me have a very emotional reaction to this very simple and short story. I loved it, but it doesn't stand on it's own, it depend on previous experience with the franchise.

Now, this is not to say that all fans of the show will like it. Some will feel it shifts who Daniel is during almost all the run-time of the show. I personally feel it changes very little about that story, but I like the idea that him and the rest of the SGC carried this with them.

Also, Michael Shanks doing almost all the voices of the of the cast was very fun for me.

I'm a huge Stargate fan, so I went into it expecting to love it and I was not disappointed! The whole audiobook only runs about an hour long, so there was very little room for anything not critical to the story. Limited time they had, the adventure felt fleshed out, the characters true to the show, the stakes as high as any good episode! Michael Shanks did a great job narrating and I finished wishing he had done more!
If you like Stargate, then you need to check out this audiobook!

I very much enjoyed this, it was like listening to an old radio serial - granted my only experience with this is the LP of War of the Worlds but that was pretty epic too. There's a wonderful interview with Michael Shanks at the end as well. It is it's own unique story set early in the SG1 timeline and it would have fit right in to the series very well.

This was quite good. This definitely exceeded my expectations. I wasn’t expecting much, to be perfectly honest, and I’ll see how the rest of these hold up to my now raised expectations, but this was quite good. The set of having Daniel Jackson giving a verbal report of the events that had just transpired was a good start, but the real pay off was that the story itself was really well structured and was perfectly suited to an audio only production (although it would have made an excellent film episode as well) that really embodied the feeling and texture of the series.

An interesting look at parallel universes (we all know how much Stargate loves those, don't we?) and what might be one of Daniel Jackson's shining moments in saving the SGC from destruction single-handed!

Holy Hannah, this was amazing! Great writing, great narration - Michael Shanks did a superb job with the voices. I dare you not to get emotional when Hammond appears in his dress blues.

Also I'm glad I bought all of these audiobooks years ago...it's near impossible to get them now.

Just as good as an episode. Loved the science of this one. Love Daniel recounting as a report and that gives him the excuse to do impressions of other SG members, so full Michael Shanks talent on display.

This was good but I’m unsure what to think of the implications of the resolution 😭 Michael Shanks does an incredible job capturing the voices of Jack, Sam, Teal’c and Hammond though and the characterisation is spot on for when this audiobook is set 💖

Stargate SG-1: Gift of the Gods expands on the mythology told within the TV series. This time our beloved team of intergalactic explorers are faced with a gift from evil itself. Waking from a fog Dr. Daniel Jackson is faced with trying to figure out why two Stargate commands are connected by a bridge created by the stargate. Aided by all the characters we know and love, Jackson and the rest of the team are assisted by a new character as they fight to repel enemy forces within both realms. Now the pros and cons.

The pros:

1) Micheal Shanks' reading is outstanding. His ability to convey emotion and action is great. His depth as a character conveys well in this format and his impressions of secondary characters is outstanding.
2) The story is incredible. Sometimes audiobooks that are only one or two hours long are heavily edited and watered down, this story has a lot of depth and fun.
3) The production value is great. Some people prefer audiobooks that only have the narrators voice and don't contain any dramatics, I am not one of those people. The dramatics help to convey what a narrator can not and this audiobook does it well.

The cons:
1) There are two main characters in the book with separate voice overs. It would have been nice to have a surprise appearance or two.
2) Only an hour long. Such greatness can come in small packages, but only an hour?

I wasn't sure what to expect from the first Stargate audiobook; I've not listened to many in general and not for years. I found this really enjoyable; a great and very original storyline that felt very much like the earlier seasons of the show and a cracking twist at the end. Michael Shanks did well in narrating and the voices; his impressions of Don S. Davis and Richard Dean Anderson when reading their character's dialogue was spot on. The interview at the end was well done as well. I look forward to the rest!

One of my favorite TV-show since I remember myself and now, listening to this recording...it was utterly fantastic.
But really, one is that joy of meeting again dearly loved characters, but another thing is the story itself. It was flawless, deserving of on-screen episode at least. Short but tragic what so ever. Almost made me stop dead at one point - I was not expecting that, not in years. The ending was so controversial, made me thought of what is a person and what is real and what should never be real.
Great story, great time listening to it.

I am not really an audiobook person, but I do love this one. Michael Shanks as Daniel Jackson (who is my ultimate childhood hero btw) is great! It is almost like the show was back, and I guess that was the point of creating this audio.
So: the idea behind this and the story itself was amazing (for a hardcore Stargate fan like me), and the performance was perfect, and I have no choice but to give this one 5 stars. :)

What a great way to delve back into the always entertaining world of Stargate SG-1! I always like a good alternate reality story, and as Daniel is my favourite character from the show having the story told from his POV and narrated by Michael Shanks himself was pretty much a guarantee that I'd enjoy this a lot. Fans of the series definitely shouldn't miss out on these highly entertaining audio books.

The best SG audiobook so far. Not only is it beautifully read by Michael Shanks, the story itself is awesome too! It's very in-character, intriguing and so sad that it made me actually cry. There should be more audiobooks that would focus on the actual members of the teams, SG-1's and SGA's too. It's simply great!

My very first Audio book - and it had to be a Stargate one of course :) for the first few minutes it was something to get used to. But I got into it very quickly and loved it, and to be truthful, I'm hooked.

This story and plot was really good, a very good addiction to Stargate and Sci-Fi, and without spoiling too much of the plot – it’s a must for all sci-fi and stargate fans.

Really enjoyed listening to this, its an interesting story I wish it could have been a bit longer though. Michael Shanks did a really good job of impersonating his sg1 team mates and other sg1 personnel, very enjoyable.
