Cordelia and the squirrel prince embark on a quest to find a lost treasure in this thrilling second installment of the “sweet and silly” ( Booklist ) Squirlish series perfect for fans of Sophie Mouse and Critter Club!

Can there really be a shark in Central Park?

Cordelia is a human girl raised by squirrels in Central Park. She’s famous among the squirrels, but it’s still a surprise when the squirrel queen summons her to Belvedere Castle. The queen wants Cordelia to protect the shark-obsessed Prince Oliver as he goes on a quest to find the missing Royal Scepter.

But Cordelia and Oliver soon run into trouble. This is the first time Oliver has left the castle, and he is super excited. He ignores the dangers lurking everywhere, from skateboarders to super-slippery slides—to a scheming pirate! And the prince would much rather find a shark than a scepter. Can Cordelia even keep up with him, let alone keep him safe?

Will Cordelia get the prince to complete his mission and deliver him back to Belvedere Castle in one piece?

Squirlish Shark in the Park is the second book in the Squirlish series and is just as charming as the first book. The book is about Cordelia, a girl who lives in Central Park with squirrels. She lives in the trees and speaks Chittering which is the language of the squirrels. Cordelia is summoned by the Queen of the Squirrels to watch over Prince Oliver while he seeks out the missing royal specter. A remarkable adventure leads Cordelia and Prince Oliver through Central Park, where they find the royal specter in an unlikely location.

What I Liked: The storyline is unique and playful. It makes the reader use their imagination as they envision Cordelia living in the trees and talking to squirrels in their language. The story is also humorous, and I always chuckle when Cordelia tries to interact with humans. Cordelia often behaves awkwardly and reinforces the notion that she's more squirrel than human. Having Prince Oliver as part of the story and reading about his love of sharks was a great addition. As a result of his obsession with sharks, Prince Oliver leads Cordelia on an interesting adventure through Central Park, which includes a meeting with a pirate squirrel.

Squirlish Shark in the Park is a book that encourages young readers to use their imagination. I highly recommend this book for readers who love animals and adventure.

This is the second book in the Squirlish book series about a girl who lives in Central Park with the squirrels. The premise is obviously ridiculous which is a lot of what makes this early chapter book so much fun. In this adventure, that does stand alone, Cordelia is tasked with protecting the Prince of the squirrels while he goes on a quest. The whole thing seems like something dreamt up while watching squirrels in New York City and it is hilarious. I love how imagination runs wild, but is all well grounded in the real Central Park geography. A funny, fast paced, illustrated and imaginative chapter book for early elementary schoolers.

My son loved the second book in this series! As he’s the one who is reading them at this time, I promised to include what he liked most: he loved the search for the royal scepter and what it turned out to be, and his favorite scene was when Prince Oliver landed in the lady’s diaper bag. Overall another winning juvenile novel by Ellen Potter, and I will definitely be sharing this series with my younger sons.

The sequel to A Girl In The Tree is just as cute and funny as the first! There is a part that mentions Seneca Village, which was a settlement of mostly black people that had to relocate to make room for Central Park. It wasn’t preachy or anything but was talked about as a part of the history of Central Park.
