When Sam J. Lundwall first proposed the idea of his writing a novel with the central theme of this book it was with the thought of writing but the one entitled Alice's World. It was on that basis that Ace Books gave him the go-ahead signal. But as Mr. Lundwall progressed with the writing, it began to occur to him that there could be an altogether different way to approach the same premise—more satirical, more humorous, and with an alternate plot. As this idea grew he became more intrigued with the potential and, considering that the work was to be presented as part of one of the famous Ace double books, he finally approached us with the idea of doing both approaches to the theme.
The idea was as intriguing to us as to him and we gave him the okay to go ahead with both novels. So we are pleased to present this unique package—two novels, quite different, by the same author and based on the same basic premise. So if you note No Time for Heroes as having certain things in common with Alice's World, it's not a coincidence. Rather, we hope, it makes for a double treat.
No Time for Heroes, 131pp. / Alice's World, 122pp.
No Time For Heroes “There’s no time for heroes like the present,” said General Superhawk, as he was relieved from his laundry duties to head the spaceship’s invasion of the untouched-by-human-hands-or-feet planet, which had been dead for 200,000 years.
“This is absolutely no time for heroes” said the planet’s central brain computer which had, in its long, long loneliness, peopled its planet with fabled literary creatures created from its monstrous protoplasma vats.
“I’m no hero!” screamed the small, fat man with the moustache as he was bullied onto the planet as the ship’s Number One scout.

Alice’s World (3.5 stars) At some point in the future all of humanity had left earth. 50,000 years later, after the rise and fall of the ‘Empire’, Confederation citizens went on a mission to find the mythical ‘earth’, the long-lost home of humanity. What our heroes find on this long-lost planet is AI running a mixture of fairy tales and mythology (notably some Scandinavian mythology). But will this AI welcome humans back home? You must read to find out.
No Time For Heros (2.5 stars) Similar to Alice’s World but now we are 200,000 years after humanity left earth. Over the top characters General Superhawk and Colonel Ironjaw send our unfortunate main character Bernhard down to the planet to figure out what is going on. Bernhard fumbles his way though a gauntlet of computerized myths and fairy tales as well as advertising AI trying to sell him things. Funny at first but the over the top satire and humor got a bit much for me as the story went on.
Reaching down into the box of science fiction books from the 60s and 70s (that I got from my late father), I pulled out this ACE Double from 1971. There are two stories by Sam J. Lundwall ( born 1941), a Swedish SF author and publisher--and singer. I had read the story on one side-"Alice's World," so this time, I read the story on the other side-"No Time for Heroes." This was written as satire or a parody. Our hero, Bernhard, is no hero at all but is sent to explore a planet that was the once-great center of a galactic empire that collapsed long before. Bernhard's main interest is to save his skin rather than be some heroic spaceman.. The situation on the planet is an interesting one--a central computer controls the planet and creates inhabitants based on literary characters--so there's a Count of Monte Cristo, a Dracula, cowboys and Indians, gods from different mythologies--and a "Conan the Conqueror." Nice to know Robert E. Howard's barbarian character exists thousands of years in the future! (What literary characters would you like to see brought to life? ) Anyway, I give it ***. It is a fast fun read, but I prefer a little more to the story.
