Unexpectedly good game, great story.

The game is awesome! It has a slow start, but don't let that fool you. I played until the point of the first vote, then went to sleep. I've found myself going to take a piss in the middle of the night and then couldn't go back to sleep, thinking about how I could have done things better in retrospect, accounting for the new resource management mechanics that were presented. I went to my computer and restarted the game. I played the game until it was night again... Story: I replayed every save point multiple times to optimize everything and got everyone alive to the end. Even so, it made me tear up a few times, which is remarkable and it shows great storytelling, making you feel emotinally invested in the characters, feeling pride or joy sorrow for them without them even dying. I did not expect it to be this good. Gameplay: it starts off easy as you get accustomed to the mechanics and gets exponentially harder as you progress, then it eases up in the very last segment to let you focus on the ending of the story. It feels really well-paced and ever-challenging. The soundtrack was good and appropriate, with a few standout moments. Technical problems: The game had many, many small issues that I repeatedly encountered, mostly a lot of interface bugs and dozens of typos. I didn't encounter anything game-breaking or any crashes. The version I played was the 1.0.0 GOG launch version. Just as I finished the game, they released version 1.2, which I hope improves things. I still gave the game 5 stars because of 2 reasons: 1. Even with those issues, the game was still great. 2. I know that Bellular (the indie devs) did not release it like this out of malice or greed. I've been following them on YouTube for a long time. They are very pro-consumer, pro-employees and against always online DRM. It was quite simply lack of experience on their part. It was their first released game and I think it's amazing it came out this good. This game is truly an achievement on their part.

Wonderful little title

Great little game. Survival mechanics are light. Story is good. Characters are good. Endings are interesting. Music is good. At it's core it's a choose your own adventure type story with some light survival mechanics with a great cast of characters and an ending that's interesting in itself to explore that buttons up much of the story. You play the first mate that becomes the captain of a questionable expedition. The boat's various cast of characters is likeable. Wish there were more than were well fleshed out but the ones that were were real good. The scene/environment as the story progresses changes regularly which keeps things interesting. There's a number of twists too that keep things fun. It has a novel save system which lets you go back and choose different routes which is creative. v1.3.0 fixes all the major/minor bugs that cause problems. On GoG now. Before GoG had 1.3.x the devs were kind enough to help make a work around for a progress killing bug but after 1.3.x I was able to go back and test and things progressed fine. So, good support from the devs. For a dev's first release they did fantastic (despite some early release bugs - which I'm overlooking here because of the direct support from the devs when I posted my problem on their discord).

Good game but frustrating

This game gives me feeling that are difficult to describe, but I'll try my best here. On one hand, the story and the way characters are written instantly clutched onto me and made me want to discover more and more of it. But on the other hand... The game seems to have been crafted in a way that makes it hostile to that very idea. Not because the game's difficult, because it's not that hard. It's based on an efficient management of your ressources and workforce, so as long as you know what you're doing you'll be fine. The problem lies in the fact the game doesn't tell you anything about how to play. It doesn't tell you how to put workers on a station, doesn't tell you how much food you're gonna have to spend at the end of the week (until you have to do so, and at this point if you happen to not have it you just screwed your week and have no way of knowing it), you get research points but have no idea what they're used for, the list goes on and on. There is nothing that comes close to a tutorial, you have to discover the mecanics all by yourself and said mecanics are locked to certain chapters of the story. So what happens is : you start the story, arrive Week 7-8 realise that you're screwed because of something you should've done week 4 but had no way of knowing it back then. Add to this that there is no manual save, so everytime you end up in this situation you've got to go back to the week save and redo everything again. You want to progress in the story, but can't because the game is designed to hinder your very understanding of how to play the game, so you have to redo the exact same thing over and over again. In my first attempt I had to restart the story 4 times before I even reached week 9 in the story because I kept discovering mecanics that would've been useful to know from the start. The game is good, the story is good, the characters are good, but having to redo everything all the time simply because the gameplay hides itself from you is frustrating

good game, some flaws

+ good story, nice melancholic atmosphere + I like the artwork and + the atmospheric sound = replaying weeks/ rounds after failure feels like a chore (the dialogs are the same, all over again) - a few easy to fix spelling mistakes (bickets of coal :/) - missing left handed mouse support, no way to switch mouse buttons, game ignores OS mouse settings After all I still will try it again until I succeed - I don't think I will replay it afterwards. Would buy it again.

An artistic gem, fun to play too!

It is at its core a resource management game, where you try to keep the morale of your crew high, while rationing food and heating supplies. Around this core, however, is a gripping story with beautifully written dialog and fascinating characters. Although the gameplay is simple, it is fairly challenging, even though I am no stranger to strategy games. The artistic style, including the pictures and the music, is simply beautiful. It made me really feel the weight of the critical decisions that I had to make.
