Zubrovtsi
Nature Art Symposium "The Uncharted"
Gabrovtsi village, Bulgaria
July 2025
An ancient presence emerges from the trees: a bison, massive and silent, emerges from the forest like a spirit from another time. Zubrovtsi is the name given to this creature, a symbolic fusion of "Zubǎr" (bison) and Gabrovtsi, the village that now houses its memory.
Made almost entirely of oak branches, the sculpture embodies more than one animal: it embodies the essence of the forest and the past of these lands, suspended between nature and myth.
As part of "The Uncharted" symposium, dedicated to the invisible, the forgotten, and the unexplored, the bison becomes a symbol of an unexpected return. Extinct in Bulgaria since the Middle Ages, it reappears today, both physically and spiritually, to watch over the village. Is it a guardian? A warning? A shadow seeking justice?
Zubrovtsi is an invitation to rediscover what has been lost, especially humanity's relationship with nature, to walk the fine line between time, the land, and its heritage.
