BUILDING BRIDGES
A Photography Exhibition by Ebuka Mordi.
Through images of people, moments, bridges, and waterfronts across West Africa and Europe, Ebuka Mordi highlights the importance of building bridges that aren’t physical. These structures represent cultural passages and the drive to be seen, especially within the context of Nigerian creatives. The Bridge Exhibition presents a visual journey between limitation and infinite possibility; celebrating universal human experiences and art’s power to connect cultures in the face of difficulty. The collection marks the beginning of an annual series dedicated to amplifying voices that deserve to resonate beyond borders—proving that the greatest bridges are built not of steel and concrete, but of vision and light.
The Thrill Of The Ride
We begin further down the journey of bridge-building, and there lay semblances of success. These tangible rewards for labour remind us that the work is worth doing. Nonetheless, they give more than a mere invitation to rest. They give us the resources and responsibility to move forward faster than ever. The questioning about where to go and who to go with is an ongoing one which may never be quite “solved”
The Bridge
Here, there is a path we can rely on. Not only does the once distant land now grow similar, but the connection itself is part of our daily lives. We plant trees and build schools around them knowing that coming generations will have their own stories to tell about this connection. The two worlds lay side by side; admiring each other and the fearful work of the builder.
Chapters Across
In one world, some stories live in all their colour and childlike hope without the knowledge of stories beyond. The world here is vast enough for four lifetimes of exploration, but the world away is vast still, and the water rolls between them. The water is wide in its own right, and the people on this side only see one side of its face, the world away holds the other.
Unclear Vividness
The exploration of distant lands causes a shift in our patterns of thinking, being, and doing. The builder returns home with fresh ideas and challenges the kinsfolk to try new things. These ideas spin into a whirlwind of action and change. At first, it may be unclear, but when the dust settles, the new society is as beautiful as a woman in a garden. But even the spinning itself is alluring.
The Boat Ride
On these boundless seas, a carrier of culture may cross, slowly. On such voyages, there are unknown tasks and terrains. The traveller may reach a new world and leave the familiar behind but there is still the need for a connector. The connector must join the foundations and fundamentals of communities that stand chasms apart.
Bridges
It is difficult to fathom that our story does not start on one side and then cross to another, but when we look to the centre, we see all ends as beginnings. Beyond the bonds formed between not-so-distant places, greater bridges must be built and the builder will create them.
No Boundaries
What happens when the bridge has been built and carriers of culture continue to cross it? We have a community as God intended; inclusive, safe, and without racial or gender-based fear. Conversations here flow freely, so we explore the different shades and shapes of shared humanity.
Indeed, two people grow comfortable, enjoying each other’s company beside the very bridge that took so long to build.
Piège Coloré
Language, taste, fashion, pride. African culture exists in many brilliant and vibrant forms but often goes unnoticed. The bridge must be built so that the other world can see, taste, and know the existence of this rich culture.
Perspectives
There is value to be seen in the work of unsung heroes, those resilient bridge builders that carry the weight of worlds on their heads. Hasty judgments can eclipse this value, so it is up to the viewer to choose to see it differently.
If you need a heroic photo that encourages you to know you are not alone when carrying burdens or a playful, carefree view that tells you to take life easy, you are invited to position this work upside down or right-side up.
Safe space
We all have an image of a place that sparks hope and joy. In those images, we see a promise of serenity. There is a painful irony in how humanity rushes toward stillness; not realising that our presence will change that sacred place just as much as we hope it will change us. Nevertheless, this is how we are freed of the familiar and build hearts with the capacity for adventure. It is not a linear race, and there is often a time to circle back when we rediscover what we can truly call home.
Ripples
Water moves. It bears both gifts and burdens while inviting us to see more of ourselves in its reflection. The scientific mind yearns to measure and predict its waves but each one is of a kind; lasting mere moments and still having implications for the wave to follow.
The builder knows that the worlds he seeks to connect are as dynamic as the waters that separate them.
Beyond The Fog
There is the bridge itself and the towers that sustain it. Even if these connections are unseen, they are still there; holding perfectly the tension between worlds. Amid the noise, the artists that continue to create command our attention and allow us to perceive their significance.
Quiet Fields
What does the other world represent to you:
Newness, a space for clarity, introspection, ease?
In such quiet fields, the culture carrier can capture their inner beauty, contrasted with the allure of the world around them. This is what the bridge offers.
Sabotage and Support
How does one unite entire cultures if one is not first at peace with oneself?
In this secret room of exhaustion, words may fortify or weaken the bridge’s anchor. The decision to speak life or death is pivotal and if not for the impact on himself, he must rise for the sake of the connector.
Vantage Point
Exploration begins with bravery. This culture carrier is fully rooted in who she is as she searches for more. Her vantage point of the world beyond holds curiosity and hope. She sees the sea and the sea sees her; the people beyond need to see her too.
At the heart of her determination to explore, there remains a reverence for the elements that have sustained her thus far, and the ones that will carry her across
The First steps
It takes courage to use the same wounded feet to walk toward healing. The journey ahead is unfamiliar, and so is the destination, but the worlds must meet each other. In each step, there is chaos, healing, and strength.
Stretched Out
In these lush lands that took a great deal to find, the culture carrier lays down to rest. These strengthened feet are surrounded by the bounty to be basked in, and maybe even brought home.
The Difference
Before the bridge, all one can hold on to is the sound of the sea and its promise of a better path. Here, the tides and waves crash against the rocks, reverberating with the knowledge of the presence of land across.
The Paths
In the course of building the bridge, there are choices to be made. At first, the environment offers the builder many paths. And with growth, these choices are narrowed down, further and further until there is a new world around him.
Race
The builder breaks into a sprint but the journey is long. Spurred on by the hope of being “first”, he runs further and further. There are other builders like him, competing, but focus blurs them from view. The track will either break or better him, but if there is a finish line, he will find it.
Waves
There is more to be seen in the waters despite how much they have been waded through. As much splendour exists in the tide’s rising, we must walk over it, lest the dream of connection be drowned.
