Looking for a little fright to go with your fa-la-la? Three thrilling horror writers—Lisa Morton, Carolyn Haines (aka R.B. Chesterton), and Laura Benedict—bring you three short, sharp tales of terror to liven up your holiday fireside reading. The Christmas Spirit By Lisa Morton In a last-ditch effort to save their troubled marriage, Elise and Ray decide to get out of London for Christmas and spend time together at the tatty, atmospheric Yorkshire cottage Elise has inherited from her Aunt Priscilla. When Ray surprises Elise with The Christmas Spirit, an old book he’s bought in the village, Elise reads it aloud, anxious to make their stay a success. But the tale of murder and violence transcends time, reaching out for Elise and Ray, threatening not just their marriage, but their lives. The Christmas Ornament By Carolyn Haines (aka R.B.Chesterton) Homesick and stuck at Cornell University over the Christmas holidays, Clair and four of her fellow grad students accept Carlos Ard’s invitation to spend Christmas at his great-uncle’s isolated Victorian summer home deep in the woods. After a Christmas Eve feast, everyone settles in to hear ghost stories, but after Carlos brings out a box containing a family heirloom from Romania—a Christmas ornament that’s so cursed that it cannot even safely be seen—the adventure becomes a nightmare from which Clair may never wake. The Christmas Gnome By Laura Benedict Venus Hansen has a perfect face, a perfect house, a perfect husband and two perfect children. When her mother-in-law in Norway sends them a shabby wooden Christmas gnome, Venus’s perfect husband, Steffan, insists on surprising the children each morning before Christmas with some holiday-themed mischief that the gnome has gotten into, just like a certain elf that lives on a shelf. Venus doesn’t want to have anything to do with it, but when Steffan’s pranks go awry, and the gnome starts telling Venus vicious secrets, Christmas turns deadly, and her perfect life will never be the same. Stick around after the end of the stories, if you dare. Lisa, Laura, and Carolyn have all included thrilling samples from their other, current books as a special treat.

5,0 su 5 stelle Reclaim the Victorian tradition of ghost stories for Christmas eve with three delightfully spooky short stories.
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 28 novembre 2014
Carolyn Haines (aka RB Chesterton) sends six Cornell grad students to spend Christmas Eve with the creepy, senior-student-assistant Carlos. Carlos's family cabin is more Bleak House than Little House on the Prarie, and the group finds themselves in a dark parlor surrounded by dead animals mounted like trophies on the walls. Now, Carlos is going to entertain them with the tale of "THE CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT" with a very dark past. Even I would know to run, not walk, for the closest exit.

Laura Benedict introduces us to Venus and her mother-in-law. After reading this short story, no one will ever complain about in-laws again. From Norway, the customary Christmas package arrives with typically inappropriate gifts for the grandchildren. But this year, Venus couldn't bring herself to surreptitiously replace one of the gifts, a plaster gnome with a conical hat of red felt. Unfortunately, "THE CHRISTMAS GNOME" didn't know the standard operating procedure for an elf-on-the-shelf. He's going to improvise. Run away, Venus.

Lisa Martin completes the collection with a trip to her aunt's Yorkshire cottage outside London. Elise hopes the vacation can help to salvage a troubled marriage. Her husband Ray surprises with an old book bought in the village, a ghost story to be read together on Christmas Eve. Romantic? The story tells of murder and violence that occurred in a house very much like their vacation cottage. Will "THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT" delight or horrify?

Three literary horror triumphs. I received an advance copy to review, but I've gotten my kindle version to keep. You'll want one, also.

These were not the kindof stories to ease ones mind but grimmer than most Christmas stories.

well written but too dark for me.

5,0 su 5 stelle Three awesomely terror-ible stories to give you chills and thrills this holiday season!
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 29 novembre 2014
As the cover design hints, these are not silly little ghost stories with a Christmas settings, but rather they are macabre tales that twist the traditional Christmas elements into stuff of nightmares. That treasured family ornament passed down through generations? You may think twice about putting it on the tree after reading Haines's story about such an item. And thanks to Benedict, your mischievous little elf might look a little more sinister, while Morton will give you a whole new meaning for "Christmas Spirit." Short enough to read in one sitting -- yet well-crafted enough to feel good about the $2.99 price -- these stories are the perfect break from the typical holiday fare!

5,0 su 5 stelle A creepy Christmas twist
Recensito negli Stati Uniti il 17 dicembre 2014
I love spooky, suspense filled and creepy! I can honesty say not usually in holiday books but this was a pure delight. Each story in it's own creepy way puts a unique spin on another side of Christmas. Laura Benedict is one of my favorite authors and once again she did not disappoint. Carolyn Haines and Lisa Morton were new reads for me and I will be reading more of their work. Even though it was a slight change of pace for me I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 stories.
