Contrary to the cover illustration this novel is set during the original five year mission. Unlike most of the earliest Star trek novels this book has stood the test of time and can hold its own with the latest novels, remaining true to the spirit and the values of the original series. It may be a fairly straightforward plot but there's nothing wrong with that, if told convincingly, as this story is. Flung halfway across the universe and with their ship badly damaged and unable to use its warp drive, the crew of the Enterprise face a delicate and dangerous mission on an alien planet that strains their commitment to the Prime Directive to its limits - and beyond.

5,0 de 5 estrellas Old time Trek
This is the Trek we all fell in love with. Finding out about strange new places. The characters are true to form. An adventure.

1,0 de 5 estrellas Predictable plot and americanstyle interference
The story starts out quite well, with a gravitational anomaly bringing the Enterprise to a single starsystem between two galaxies. Sadly, neither the technobabble nor the repairs feature at all.
Some of the crew go down to a planet to find resources to repair the ship. Again, this is a sidestory only. Kirk and his men get drawn into a political conflict between Executive, Jurisdiction and Technical groups. The author mentions too often that those groups are different, special or whatever. This only points you at the heart of the problem, that they are only sad copies of any other society (Come on, only 3 groups? How predictable). The three ways of thinking are all very stubborn and black-white, as well.
Solar flares appearently have sent the population into hiding on a regular basis - so that it is almost a ritual. Spock shoots some torpedoes at the sun and repairs it in totally american style (I don't care about the consequences) interference.
Kirk then forces members of the three groups on board, where they can look at stars, and plan a new constitution, while having to listen to a United Federation Brainwash Movie. I would gladly send the Tal Shiar to get Kirk for this one.

4,0 de 5 estrellas Better than I thought
I was a Star Trek fanatic back in the 80s when I was a teenager. Craving more adventures of the original crew to experience I read the pocketbook novels voraciously. As a young man with hormones raging I was more interested in the stories centered around action. I read those stories multiple times. The first six novels of the series based on the motion picture were less violent and more cerebral. As an adult I can understand the complexities of the plots woven by the authors without violence. Of the six pre Star Trek II stories this was the best.
