Biografía del autor

Stephen Baxter was born in Liverpool, England, in 1957. He holds degrees in mathematics, from Cambridge University; engineering, from Southampton University; and business administration, from Henley Management College. He’s a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society.

His first professionally published short story appeared in 1987. He has been a full-time author since 1995 and is currently Vice-President of the British Science Fiction Association.

His science fiction novels have been published in the UK, the US, and in many other countries including Germany, Japan, France. His books have won several awards including the Philip K Dick Award, the John Campbell Memorial Award, the British Science Fiction Association Award, the Kurd Lasswitz Award (Germany) and the Seiun Award (Japan) and have been nominated for several others, including the Arthur C Clarke Award, the Hugo Award and Locus awards. He has also published over 100 sf short stories, several of which have won prizes. He can be found at stephen-baxter.com.

    Eigentlich ist die Idee nicht schlecht, die Figuren werden gut beschrieben und man kann das ganze einigermassen nachvollziehen, aber es kommt leider nicht so richtig in Fahrt. Ich hatte mir mehr davon versprochen, aber nun habe ich zur Seite gelegt und was neues angefangen.

    I'll admit that I'm a fan of Stephen Baxter, and have been for a long time (I particularly enjoyed his NASA Trilogy and the Time's Tapestry series). This is a remarkable work, suggesting that a group of prehistoric tribes were able to construct walls and dams to prevent the isolation of Great Britain from mainland Europe after the last Ice Age, as the seas deepened.

    Yes, it requires the suspension of disbellief. But his characters are wonderfully complex and terrifically drawn, his knowledge of the prehistoric area is superb and lends an air of authenticity to the tale that others fail to grasp or use.

    It left me panting for the sequel, whch is next up on my bookshelf. A great read, wonderfully told.

    I loved this e-book, could not put my Kindle down. Stephen Baxter has used his scientific and archaeological background, together with his Arthur C Clarke collaboration influences, to bring us a wonderful story. He manages to make us care about the fate of characters from prehistory, faced with the possible destruction of their environment by - yes - Climate Change. This is a cutting-edge story by someone at the top of their game. I await further books in this milieu, with great anticipation.

    The first book of a trilogy. It starts well, with a look at a Europe of 10.000 years ago, when Britain was still attached to the rest of Europe and the Doggerland was above the sea.
    A beautiful country where people lived in communion with nature. Etxelur people, with a three rings tattoo, symbol of their country.
    Other people appear in the story, from the people living in America, thanks to a travel with a boat over the ocean, close to the still existing ice of the Ice Age still rampant.
    The snailheads, people who modified their head elongating it, the Pretani, hunters of the woods, all fascinating and different people.
    And the main character, Ana, daughter of Kirike, the man who travelled to America and brought back Ice Dreamer, the last of her people, the people with fluted spears.
    And Zesi, her sister, willful and aggressive, who will cause much grief, even if unwilling.
    And a boy from Jericho, Novu, who will change forever the Extelur with his knowledge of buildings and bricks.
    A strange world which could have been. A fascinating story of love and hate and war and peace.
    The second part of the book is surely better, as soon as the tale picks up the pace, and the new world comes into existence.
    Read it, it may not appeal to everybody, after all it starts quite slowly, but just the second part is worth it.

    A very good book, well written. The premises are intriguing, and although the book started slowly and not entirely in the style I was expecting, it quickly developed into a great story, interleaving several characters and stories in a fascinating yarn. I have since read Book 2 of this series, and am currently going through Book 3.
