Wow! This book takes a very unusual and very well plotted path to the vampire tale. Reminds me in spots of Nancy Baker's work, but this is a better written book with some thought provoking insights into the things all creatures must do to co-exist, adapt and survive. The author brings in some interesting ideas about the relationships between hunter and prey, and the inevitability of change over time. Good read.
This is one to try if you are tired of Draula re-treads, and cape-and-fang skulkings.

The premise of _The Vampire Tapestry_ is interesting enough, and makes the book worth reading - a presentation of the vampire not as a supernatural creature but instead some high-order product of evolution. I also appreciated the doing-away-with on Charnas' part of some the genre's more tired cliches such as nocturnalism and the self-pitying introspection that plagues certain other popular vampire characters.
The book apparently grew out of a short story once published in _Omni_ magazine. Unfortunately, the work doesn't seem to shake of that feeling. The five chapters are rather disjointed in segue from one to the next. It feels less like a cohesive novel and more like an anthology centered around a single character.
Our vampire protagonist, Dr. Weyland, starts off as an intriguing enigma, but towards the climax of the book, it seems Weyland is more bored than anything. However, this malaise may have been intentional, and it does serve to explain his actions at the end of the story.
In the course of plot development, Weyland's confidence and amorality are slowly replaced with suggestions of human-like frailty and compassion. These characteristics are brought about by a series of encounters between Weyland and a psychiatrist. Having read this 1979 work for the first time in 1999, I found the author's underlying implication that psychotherapy can take care of any emotional problem to be a bit dated.
One final note; As a citizen of Albuquerque, I was initially drawn to this book because the back cover indicated that it was a vampire story set in New Mexico. In actuality, three of the five chapters take place in New York. If you're looking at purchasing this book for the southwestern setting, consider yourself warned.

An interesting take on the Vampire tale that breathes new life into a tired genre. Told as a chapter in the many lifetimes of the protaganist (or antagonist depending upon your point of view) Dr. Weyland, the reader receives more insight into the lives of academics then any real plot development, but it is an original piece of work with interesting moments and a satisfying conclusion. A Nebula nomination is what prompted me to read this novel and I don't believe it was a waste of time to read it.

What a refreshing book in this genre of seduction and fangs. The vampire as an evolutionary branch, being a lone member of his species, struggling to survive. Reading a plausible slant on the existence of vampires was surprising, but the quality of writing here kept me reading; I was sad to finish it. Dr. Weyland as the predator, antagonist, protagonist, and main character was a fascinating perspective. A complex picture of the vampire's struggle to live among the look-alike species he feeds on was deftly painted. Each section had a steady pace and great atmosphere. Time for me to get more Charnas!

Probably the best of the "revisionist" vampire novels. The writing is excellent throughout: at times, especially at the end, it becomes quite haunting. Simply a virtuoso performance.

Told from the vampire's point of view, this is a must read. A novel that you will not be able to put down. One of the classics!

    Spoiler alert.

This is one of the best vampire novels I have ever read. I'm not a fan of the stereotypical Dracula, Nosferatu, or classic undead vampires, nor do I like cheesy vampires, vampire dramas or soap operas, or teen vampire dramas. I like vampire stuff that has it's own unique take on vampires, and this was a goldmine. A biological vampire who is the only one of his kind who lives alongside his prey with an uneasy empathy with those around him. He isn't undead or supernatural in any way. His condition is purely biological in nature. I didn't like the sexual scene in the book, but that's my preference. Otherwise I think it was a masterpiece, and a modern take on a unique type of vampire who drinks not with fangs, but his tongue. This is the kind of vampire stuff I was searching for for years. The book also explores the mental and physical differences between humans and this vampire, which is very fascinating, and also has some intriguing messages and themes mixed in as well. An excellent vampire novel.

Vale demais a leitura.

    2,0 von 5 Sternen A big let-down
Bewertet in Großbritannien am 17. Januar 2013
I have been meaning to read this novel for a long time since it is considered to be a modern vampire classic, but I must say I was profoundly disappointed and didn't even manage to finish it. It is simply long-winded and tedious, and in its efforts to present an up to date psychology(well, Eighties psycho-babble, anyway) of the vampire it loses any sense of atmosphere or narrative tension. Best avoided, in my view.

3,0 von 5 Sternen A Different Kind of Vampire, Through the Lens of A Monotonous Life
Bewertet in den USA am28. November 2017
The book is... okay. It wasn't an unpleasant read by any means. What it was, however, was slow-paced and drawn out, especially when it comes to dialogue and description. The dialogue, however, often does little to advance the plot. I would argue that you could skim until you came across a paragraph that moves the scene forward and miss little. The Vampire Tapestry is a slice-of-life drama about a different kind of Vampire, the normal and well-adjusted kind. This isn't an epic clash of good versus evil, nor is it a dark and mysterious vampire noire. It's neither dark nor scary, rather, it's a sort of morality play pertaining to issues of social justice. I feel like that's why the author spend so much time on characterization and dialogue, but that extra description came at the expense of pacing and plot. All in all, I'd recommend it if you want something to pick apart and read analytically, but not if you're looking for something thrilling.
