Bronze Summer (Northland Trilogy) Taschenbuch – 1. Oktober 2013

4,9 von 5 Sternen 13 Sternebewertungen

Stephen Baxter’s “imaginative [and] bold” (Daily Mail, UK) Stone Spring drew readers into an alternate prehistoric scenario. Now, thousands of years have passed, and a wall that was built to hold back the sea must now hold back the advancing armies of a reviving Troy....

Created by the building of the Wall, Northland has become a society of prosperous, literate, and self-sufficient people. Inhabited from end to end, the Wall is a linear city stretching for hundreds of miles, and a wonder of the world.

For millennia, the Wall has also kept the growing empires of the Bronze Age at bay. But a new and turbulent age is dawning. For any wall, no matter how strong, can be breached—particularly from within.

5,0 von 5 Sternen Can't wait for the next one

As a long-time SF fan, I've been waiting for an author to take the place of some of the long-lost heroes of my youth who found a way to write beyond genre fiction and create characters one could care about, plots that were intriguing, and offer realistic peculation on what could have been.

Baxter has been showing how well he can do this for some time; this series moves him to the master class.

While this is part of a trilogy, it's not exactly a sequel, since the characters of the first book Stone Spring, are not long dead. It's not a spoiler to say that his point of departure in this alternative historical series is the suggestion that pre-Iron Age inhabitants of what is now Britain erect sea wall to retain their land connection to Europe as the Ice Age glaciers melt ansd the seas rise.

Flash forward centuries, and Bronze Summer describes a world where climate change is fostering huge migrations of populations, and threatening the civilizations of Mesopotamia as well as the imaginary Northland. How these two centers of the world interact forms the core of this fascinating examination of how climate change influences politics, society, and human history.

This is an outstanding example of alt/hist at its absolute finest. Kudos to Stephen Baxter; my order for Iron Winter is in!

Just about that time of day when I think all imagination has taken the polar route and I have little left but workplace dead space, I see Baxter again there on the night stand. Hope returns, as imagination returns, and I easily drift away.
I love Baxter. He takes me to places I otherwise wouldn't go.
