I gave this book 5 stars because I couldn't stop reading. I was enthralled with the world created by Terry Brooks. The key I think is that you really care about all the characters and must know what happens to them. It leaves you eager to read the next book in the series.

At first I thought "here we go again, a repeat of the first book, but with a later generation." However, as the book progresses it is totally different and another great Terry Brooks story. I missed the original magic and having Allanon around to guide everyone, but perhaps Cogline will do that in the next book. We shall see!

Terry Brooks weaves a tale better than most. His Shannara series hold your attention from start to finish with plenty of twists to keep you guessing. The characters are three dimensional with faults and good qualities too. These books can appeal even to those who don't normally much like the fantasy genre.

A great way to continue the story and Terry writing a story over a number of books has really helped the flow. The world of Shannara seems to be growing with every outing. I feel that when I have read them all I will believe this world will come to pass. Love, love, love these books

There isn't much to say about the plot that hasn't already been said. I liked this book. The sibling relationship between Par and Coll is more than Par suspects from the beginning. As they begin their life as fugitive's Par relies more and more on Coll's ability to take care of him when shit hits the fan - as it always does in the Brooks books. Par is the only one of the Ohmsford's that more or less willingly embraces his quest placed upon him by Allanon. He sets off to find the Sword of Shannara. Wren and Walker are less enthusiastic, to say the least. Terry Brooks manages to portray the indecision and fear that Walker faces to a great extent and Wren to a lesser.
All in all an excellent portrayal of the difficulties in choosing which road in life to take. The portrait gallery in this series has certainly been brought alive by Brooks. This is my second reading and it was as good as the last one.

This is a great first part to a new epic story. 300 years have passed since wishsong, much has changed, but not the need for the Ohmsfords and friends (with familiar family names) to save the day. Action packed throughout and a brilliant read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Brooks Classic
Reviewed in the United States on 16 May 2000
This book is written in typical Brooks fashion; lots of action and suspense. The characters come to life and you actually feel that they are a part of you. Again, the Ohmsford family is at the center of the story. This time, the brothers Par and Coll, as well as Wren and Walker Boh, are each given different quests by the shade Allanon, who has been dead for 300 years. The Shadowen have appeared and threaten to destroy the Four Lands unless they can be stopped. Par is to find the legendary Sword of Shannara, Walker is to find the Black Elfstone which will restore the Druids, and Wren is to discover the missing Elves. Other intriguing characters are introduced, such as Padashar Creel, Steff, Teel, and Garth. The action in this book is intense, and the characters come to life. I have read the first Shannara series, as well as the Landover series and the Word and Void series, and this is book is one of the best.
