Although, as it is for the stories from the 1840s and 1950s, the technicalities do add a sense of the authority of verisimilitude to this sci-fi narrative, they are also the distraction from the essential dramatic aspects of the narrative that -- as championed by Michael Piller and Ronald D. Moore, et al -- are of primary appeal to fans of Star Trek. A. E van Vogt, I believe, was wise to this, which is possibly why, contrary to the criticisms of Damon Knight, van Vogt simply gave it a name and moved swiftly along with the "adeledicnander" :-) Not sure if a few of the details are minor slips (warp 11 TEREC), over which, editorial was as unaware, or, since Corona was published between Star Trek TOS and TNG, these were considerations that had yet to be employed or dismissed. Anyway, by the end of it all, this story by Greg Bear is solid and emotional stuff that is well written and organised.

great service, first class all round

Titan Books continue their series of novels based on classic Star Trek with #24: Corona by Greg Bear. From the stardate, this novel is set in the middle of season three of the show but sometimes the writer makes references to series events as though they were over a decade ago which can be a little confusing.
Starfleet receives a distress call from inside the Black Box Nebula where a science station manned by Vulcans has been studying the nebula and the unusual levels of ybakra radiation inside.
The Enterprise, which has just been refitted at Yalbo, is tasked with finding out what has happened to the scientists. Kirk has two additional problems on the mission. One is a certain Rowena Mason from the Federation News Service who is there to do a report on the ship and crew as well as their interaction with the new computer system. This system is Kirk's other problem, a massive core of six machines with each one containing the complete memory patterns and experience of the six best Starfleet captains. They have the capacity to override Kirk's decisions if they believe he is acting irrationally, against orders or simply failing to execute his duties in a timely manner.
When the ship finally arrives at the station, they find no life signs but there are still four Vulcans there and another 30 in cryogenic hibernation. They soon realise that the Vulcans are under the influence of an alien intelligence which is using them to create a device which has the potential to destroy the universe.
Corona is by far one of the weakest Trek novels in the series to date. It's a small book and a quick read and essentially never gets into the spirit of the original series at all. The characters aren't written badly, but some of the dialogue is rather unbelievable. The whole concept behind the story seems rather absurd and something that would be more at home an Irwin Allen show rather than Star Trek.
All in all, this book is definitely for completists only and like some of the weaker third season scripts, it's certainly not Star Trek at its best.

4.0 out of 5 stars The beginning

So once again I have read this one eleven years ago and I still enjoyed it. It is a telling story about our beginnings and possible endings. As usual the Enterprise and her crew are on a life or death mission. A new group of Vulcans are at front and center, with the a to Spock. Its amazing to me how big his family really is based on the books I have read. Can they all be saved from the most unlikely of places. This was a moving tale with a good storyline.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Unsatisfying Ending
Reviewed in the United States on 18 June 2025
Although I enjoyed reading this science fiction drama, I felt that the plot wasn't quite complete. The plot starts out compellingly, as we learn of an entity that has taken control of a Vulcan science team on a remote space station. The Enterprise bridge crew investigates. However, as the story continues, the character narrations become repetitive. Not all characters are completely fleshed out, and others are forgotten. I felt as if the book needed one last chapter to give it a really good summary and tie off loose ends. That didn't happen. The story is mildly suspenseful in points, but could have been much better.

I did like this book and found it not only a good Star Trek book but interesting science fiction. I always enjoy learning about Vulcan traditions .The fact that many of the characters in the book were Vulcan made the book interesting to me.This book is an early Star Trek book so one has to remember that as one reads it. The technology does seem more advanced at times. I liked the way the characters were portrayed .Overall an interesting read with our favorite crew where they all have a part in this book.
