- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 November 2011Mike's debut novel is a taut, action packed thriller that skilfully combines a gritty Cop story set in the seething mass of Manhattan with an Alien presence wreaking havoc amongst the young men of the City. Add in some distinctly Noir elements and you have a surefire winner.
Centred around the relentless and conflicted Detective Frank Ballaro, his long time friend on the force Captain Rodriguez, and their dogged refusal to let the case drop, Atmosphere is a thudding, intense story that drags you along to an ending of violence, conspiracy and blind courage, with numerous twists, traps and tests of Frank's psyche.
The strange device called Atmosphere is a unique and cunning device that works on both victim and reader as you find yourself drawn in to the tense drama, that is fleshed out with colourful characters drawn from the equally descriptive streets of New York City

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope to see more from this author. 5 STARS *****
First off, in case I forget, be sure to check out Michael Laimo's website at [...] The site is as great as this book and has a lot of info for writers out there.
Yes, this book is has a very cool noir feel to it. Definitely to be read at night I would say. The characters jump right off of the page and into your mind, dwelling there long after you've set your head on the pillow to sleep.
I would tell anyone who is looking for a new monster in the horror genre, to defintely read Michael Laimo. It's not all gore, it's not all of the same crud that's been published over and over, it's as true to originality that you can get to in this day with the zillions of horror writers out there.
Don't miss out on this one. And yes, as one of the other reviewers stated: I can't wait for Laimo's next offering.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesnt satisfy
Now that you have read the reviews herein written by the author's family, agent and publicist I hope you will take a minute to look at one from an impartial reader.
At age 51, I only have so may beach trips left where I can relax and read a book so the ones read need to be good. The book was a flat out disappointment. Not particularly well written, poor character development and weak continuity with a disjointed and silly story line.
When the great revelation about the aliens' intent and m.o. is revealed it is more of "What the hell" rather than an "Oh my gosh!".
Writer needed to develop his story a little more spending more time on some of the characters and sub plots so that they are more meaningful and satisfying. Instead they drop off of a cliff and are not properly integrated or played out.
The ending seemed hurried and abrupt and fell way short of what I had hoped would be the final push that made the book worth the read. This was especially deflating since the first 300 pages had little if any action or excitement and were a labor to get through.

3.0 out of 5 stars Challenge of putting an original twist to alien invasion
This is the second book I have read by the author and, overall, it was an entertaining read. Imagine that sex-driven aliens invade New York and an ordinary, middle-aged detective is coming home late one night and finds blood running down the gutter. Well, the rest takes off from there. Frank, the detective, is the likeable guy, with three persona, who must defeat the creepy visitors. Some of the other characters tend to be a bit vague...the daughter...why do we have her in the story? How come aliens programming teens to kill, don't always have them follow through? Some of these inconsistencies get in the way of enjoying the plot. In summary, okay for a trip on a plane.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fast read with an entertaining plot.
Iam still in the process of reading Michael Laimos first 4 books that he has written,I did not start in the order in which they were published though, but I give him two thumbs up on "Atmosphere". The story had a good plot and kept me entertained while reading it,I finished the book in 4 days.
This book had just the right amount of suspense/horror in it...enough to keep me wanting to read more to find out what exactly "Atmosphere" was without scaring me to much as Michaels other books have (especially The Demonologist).
After you read this book then his others-you will see that his books only get better, each one having a better plot than the previous along with very interesting (non one dimensional characters)that will keep you up til the early hours of the morning yearning to see what happens next.
What I really enjoy about Michaels books is that while reading them, you can actually visualize each scene in your mind and try to draw up conclusions with the visualizations you have come up with (which is good for your brain). I also enjoy the different personas he creates for his characters,no two characters in his books are alike,he puts alot of hard work into creating the perfect story and it shows.
Looking forward to reading Dead Souls next then will start Fires Rising right after.
