- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 August 2016I cannot imagine why anyone would ever publish Vathek without the Episodes. I read this book first in Croatian and the episodes were there; after moving to the UK in the eighties, I spent may years trying to locate the Episodes in English. At last I've got them! One of the finest booksby anyone, ever.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 April 2022As lush and richly imagined as its parent novel, and still -for all its age- capable of raising an eyebrow even today. These three tales drip their Arabian Nights setting, but with a definite leaning toward the darker side (they are, after all, related in Hell); covering evil for evil's sake, lust (of all varieties - I mean, incest and necrophilia get a look in!), utter single-mindedness and self-absorption, fratricide (and most of the other 'cides), and many other black delights besides.
The prose, even from a contemporary viewpoint, never cloys, and is clear, consistent, and engaging throughout. I could happily have read many more of these, but we only have three (and the third is unfinished). If you've read Tanith Lee's Flat earth sequence (the first modern stories that spring to mind as comparable), and -of course- if you've read Vathek itself, I can't see why you wouldn't find much to enjoy in The Episodes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Now for the bad news: the formatting is atrocious
The Episodes of Vathek contains three more stories in the style of Vathek:
1. The story of Prince Alasi and the Princess Firouzkah
2. The story of Prince Borkiarockh
3. The story of Princess Zulkais and Prince Kalilah
They are included in English translation and the original French.
There is also an introduction that includes letters between Beckford and his translator, the Rev. Samuel Henley.
The e-book contains photo-copies of the original book.
Now for the bad news: the formatting is atrocious.
There are no links to the Introduction or the separate stories. There seemed to have been page headers, footers, and footnotes that were simply dumped into the text, often in the middle of a sentence. For example,
I had to ascend a throne, to govern a numerous people,.....
to do justice
The Episodes of Vathek
to all, and, in a word, live among my subjects.
,,,,,,,,
Where shall
The Episodes of Vathek
I stand then?
Even for the cheap price, they should have done a better job on the formatting.
