- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 August 2013Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseI read the Odessy series by Arthur C Clarke when I was in high school, and he was instantly my favourite author. After reading many of his novels, and a few short stories, I thought I would just go ahead and get the full collection. I am only about 20% of the way through right now and I will add edits later when I am finished, but already, its one of my favourite books.
All the stories take you on a small journey based off of one core idea that you figure out as the story progresses. That is one of the best aspects of these stories - you get your "pay off" pretty soon. However, the characters you encounter are well fleshed out, even though there is not much development simply because of the stories being short. But still, ACC somehow manages to convey the core characters and that makes you invested in them, and thus the pay offs of the stories are genuine. And of course, the sci-fi ideas themselves are classic Clarke. If you like classic sci-fi, the you'll love these stories. They imbue in you the sense of wonder that Clarke is so good at conveying, even in the occasional dystpoic stories.
My favourite stories until now are "Retreat from Earth", "Hide and Seek" and "Rescue Party". Its a perfect book to take with you while travelling, or read on your way to work or simply before going to bed at night.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 November 2023Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseAll Clarke's shorter works, in one place! This includes the sublime ,"Meeting with Medusa", about the best novella/novelett ever written by anyone. The rest of the titles are shorts dating back to the 1930s, but don't let this put you off, you'll need to hunt far and wide to find better real science in science fiction. Notions still in use in Sci-Fi today first started life in these stories, as you will see ("the lion of comarre"...no spoilers if you havent read it, but 75 years after it was written is has huge impact today). Not perhaps the most literature-gifted writer, Clarke's writing is plain and simple, but he's a realist rather than a pompous optimist.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 April 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt's the collected short story works of Arthur C. Clarke, the big man himself. The mind behind 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Sentinel and Rendezvous With Rama. One of the Big Three of 20th Century science fiction. He needs no more introduction than that. This almost-1000 page behemoth of over 100 stories is not so much a book as an investment.
His writing remains absolutely world-class after all these years and hasn't aged a day. Some stories are stronger than others, but if you don't like the one you're currently reading, you can skip on to the next. I'll admit a personal bias because Clarke's short stories were my obsession throughout my teenage years (along with cheap black eyeliner and the boy who sat beside me in History) but even now as an adult I remember the giddiness of staying up all night to read ONE MORE STORY, not giving a damn that I had school in the morning. When this book dropped through my letterbox, my life screeched to a halt as I became 15 again, still amazed by his stories nearly ten years later.
If you love sci-fi, you need this in your life. Hell, if you love books, you need this in your life. And then set aside a few weeks to delve into the rest of Clarke's bibliography. It's worth the journey.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 May 2025Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseFantastic stories from the Master!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 March 2024Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseMany of the early stories are from before anyone had been into space, never mind set foot on the moon or anywhere else. He got some things wrong, but many things right. He imagined the future before it happened and this is an essential read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 December 2023Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseBy modern standards this is not an easy read. There is wheat amongst the chaff, but there is certainly some chaff.
As someone who grew up with the "big three"of SF's work back in the 70's it didn't really live up to the memory. Some of the stories are quite good, and it's worth the read as there are some not accessible anywhere else.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 January 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWell worth the money and contains some stories that will probably stay in my mind for a very long time. Some of my favourites are: Retreat from Earth (1938) The Forgotten Enemy (1949) Time's Arrow (1950) & The Nine Billion names of God (1953) and lastly my personnel favourite because it mixes crime & Sci-Fi together which is rare occurrence - All the Time in the World (1951). With over 100 stories in this book you are bound to find quite a few that do not appeal to you. The White Hart Pub stories were in the main very nervy and there are a lot of them - it also seemed apparent to me that the author from the 1960s onward put all his energies into his novels and therefore his short stories in the main suffered and perhaps that's why he didn't write many of them from this date. This book would have been 5 star rated had it not been for the tedious stories that I have mentioned above.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lo mejor y más completo (en historias cortas) que se puede encontrar de Clarke (en Inglés)
Al parecer contiene toda, TODA la ficción corta (osea, no novelas como 2001) en Inglés de Clarke (116 relatos) EXCEPTO "At the Mountains of Murkiness" y "When the Twerms Came".
