The strength of Mgr Robert Hugh Benson's novels is a very Catholic one -- he takes the existence of the invisible world very seriously. Though these are works of fiction they are clearly based on a priest's experience of the war between good and evil that rages all around us. I'm sure Mgr Robert Hugh Benson would hope that reading these novels will wake up each soul to their place in this violent spiritual battle.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spooky, but Plausible
R.H. Benson's name is forever associated with the masterful "Lord of the World," which, as near as I can determine, is the earliest instance of a "steampunk" world (his volars, his "news placards," the euthanasia machine with its floral design). This one occupies a far different world, one which is terrifying in a different sort of way. Here the subject matter is possession, exorcism, the mystic's flash of insight.
Salient throughout these stories, though, is Benson's own skepticism about "spiritualism", and mysticism as a whole. The encounters in these stories are offered to our eyes through Benson's own cautious filter. We are constantly asked to evaluate the capacity for recollection and recall of the various narrators, almost as though Benson were an attorney offering commentary on the witness's veracity and exactitude of memory.
This is not to gainsay their power or capacity to entertain -- they are striking, both for their precision of detail, and the aura of real terror (in the "moral" sense, not the "shock" sense) that pervades them.

Very entertaining old fashioned ghost stories.
