Spell Bound Paperback – 2 April 2024

4.5 out of 5 stars 380 ratings

An instant New York Times bestseller!

Two rival apprentice sorcerers must team up to save their teachers and protect their own magic in this "charming and engaging" (School Library Journal) young adult romantic adventure from the author of In Deeper Waters and So This Is Ever After.

Edison Rooker isn't sure what to expect when he enters the office of Antonia Hex, the powerful sorceress who runs a call center for magical emergencies. He doesn't have much experience with hexes or curses. Heck, he doesn't even have magic. But he does have a plan--to regain the access to the magical world he lost when his grandmother passed.

Antonia is...intimidating, but she gives him a job and a new name--Rook--both of which he's happy to accept. Now all Rook has to do is keep his Spell Binder, an illegal magical detection device, hidden from the Magical Consortium. And contend with Sun, the grumpy and annoyingly cute apprentice to Antonia's rival colleague, Fable. But dealing with competition isn't so bad; as Sun seems to pop up more and more, Rook minds less and less.

But when the Consortium gets wind of Rook's Spell Binder, they come for Antonia. All alone, Rook runs to the only other magical person he knows: Sun. Except Fable has also been attacked, and now Rook and Sun have no choice but to work together to get their mentors back...or face losing their magic forever.

I absolutely loved this book :) it was exactly the sort of light-hearted yet heartfelt read that I needed. On the surface, it can feel like it's a humourous, supernatural YA read with some very lovable characters and a recognisable grumpy x sunshine romance trope - and it's all those things. However, it's also an exploration of grief, belonging, identity, privilege, and morality.

I felt each of the characters was well-rounded and clear - we see enough through Rook & Sun's eyes to understand Antonia and Fable's overall characters, as well as hints at very interesting backgrounds. Rook of course was a ray of sunshine, and yet such a complex character dealing with many deep questions. As a non-binary Autistic, I really bonded with Sun's character - though their ND traits are not labelled, they are very clear and part of who they are. It was nice in a way not to have a big explainer paragraph detailing out the what and why, and have their needs just accepted as they were :)

It's a queer-normative world, and I liked that even when up against the "villains", no one threw around the wrong pronouns or anything - there was something so validating about that. As far as I can remember anyway - I remember it struck me as different from some of my recent queer-positive reads. I also liked that with any character using they/them pronouns, there was no focus on any specific physical shape or (again, as far as I can remember) because it wasn't relevant to the story and didn't (and shouldn't) matter.

Plot-wise, it was entertaining and sweet. There was quite a lot of gentle feelings and small steps, and sometimes I felt a little old for the romance, but I also loved the genuine, innocent nature of it. I really enjoyed the world-building and magic systems, the way the city coexists with, and is built on, magic, and would love to revisit in more magical adventures some time. The writing was beautiful and believable, and I'd definitely read anything else F. T. Lukens creates :)

Super gorgeous artwork as well of course!

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC - I'm leaving this review voluntarily, and all my opinions are my own, honest, and freely given.

TL;DR: Spell Bound was an incredibly wholesome and magical urban fantasy. This has everything from moments of coming-of-age, self-acceptance and finding your place, to adorably cursed singing mice, cataloguing cursed items in extremely haunted houses, and being tried in court for "small acts of rebellion". With a quirkily charming but no less loveable cast of characters that will have you giggling at their adorable awkwardness, laughing at their antics, and cheering for them to defeat the baddies, this book proves that the found family trope is superior. Obviously, I loved it!

Without a doubt, this book shines because of the characters. Rook, Sun, Antonia and Fable made this such a treat to read and I mean, I could probably read a whole book about all the curse-breaking jobs they do. As a notorious scaredy, I never thought I'd say that about stories featuring haunted houses, creepy cursed dolls and other cursed objects but if it's written by Lukens, I'd read it! There's something about their writing that's playful but relatable, entertaining and so easy to devour. The stars of the story are Rook and Sun but I have to give a shoutout to Antonia Hex who was incredible! She's got this standoffish, slightly pompous, mean-girl exterior and exudes this "badass-witch-who-won't-hesitate-to-curse-you" energy but of course, deep down, she's got a solid heart of gold and cares deeply for her people. I loved what she ended up becoming to Rook and how their relationship evolved from mentor/mentee to family because they both deserved it!

Rook and Sun were the perfect eager sunshine x prickly grump combination who were so adorkably awkward it was sickeningly cute and rude. Like, who gave them permission?! Their romance was a sweet slow-burn but getting both their povs also added layers to their personalities that only made me love them more. Rook is such a kind soul! He's got boundless energy and an eagerness to learn anything about magic but more than anything he's lonely after losing his grandmother. He's charming, witty and confident but he's desperate to find a place where he belongs as a non-magical person who misses being surrounded by magic. Sun was Rook's complete opposite—he's prickly and anti-social, loves magic and is a bit of a rule follower. He has a big caring family but he's also riddled with insecurities and doubts as he struggles to fit in. Through the found family that's formed between the mentors/mentees, Rook and Sun find their place to belong and the people to accept them just as they are. I loved watching both of them grow individually and together. It was so incredibly heartwarming and my chest felt so full with all the feelings that it made me happy cry! 🥹

The only aspect that I wished had been stronger was the world-building. It was enough to get an idea about this world where magic exists and is strictly controlled by the Consortium. The Consortium felt like your typical money-hungry, power-tripping corporation that cares less about the people and more about the control over said people. However, because this book was so wholesome even the evilness of this entity didn’t feel that bad and even as Rook and Sun were running for their lives, the stakes felt pretty low. I never understood just how much power the Consortium really had and whether the magical community as a whole felt oppressed by them too. I have to admit that the resolution of the conflict felt a bit anti-climactic and much too easy but I also admit that I didn't mind too much as I enjoyed the rest of it more!

This was super wholesome, I loved the Queer representation, the unique magic system, the cursed angry doormat and the found family. I do also wonder if writing a wizard(ish) book and repeatedly naming the villain as Evanna Lynne is a little bit on the nose, but also that's hilarious. And her surname? Beech.

Rook is sheer chaos, always seeming to be juggling everyone else's problems all at once, whereas Sun brings a calmer energy that perfectly balances him out. I thought the equally chaotic, destroyer of fax and coffee machines, Antonia Hex, was such a fascinating character, and this mentor role so often goes to men so this was really cool to see.

This had a bit of a vibe of a 90s TV show, the campy scenarios, the Big Bad at the end, and the plot was so much fun overall while keeping a good pace. This is a really different book than So This Is Ever After, and I think it's a much stronger story.

    I absolutely loved Spell Bound!
This was actually the first book I've read by F.T. Lukens and I'm really excited to read their other books which I actually already own.
I really enjoyed the world building and the magic system.
I also really loved both Rook and Sun!
They had the best grumpy x sunshine relationship!
    I highly recommend this book!

I loved the dual perspective that Lukens went with for the narration of this book! The story was so heartfelt and the characters all felt super fleshed out and believable. It was an exciting page turner with really sweet themes and moments, though with much less emphasis on romance than Lukens' previous entries, which worked for this narrative about found family and boundaries.
