- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 June 2020Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThe pinnacle of fantasy novels, this is a great read from cover to cover.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 June 2015Item was as described and arrived in the allotted time slot
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 May 2008The Slave Girl of Gor gives the reader an interesting perspective of a young woman thrust upon the planet known as Gor; she finds herself in an idyllic alien world which has different cultural values and customs to that of her native earth.
`Judy Thornton' the English Major and Poetess is enslaved almost immediately upon arrival and is won in a challenge when the strapping Gorean Male a Captain of the City of Ar challenges what appears to be two outlaws ready to kill the young woman after a long and confusing set of events right from the opening of the book.
The book starts rather slowly as you are viewing things through the girl's eyes and so the reader as well as she has no understanding of the language or gestures being used to control her; it is only later when she understands the language does the book become more alive and interesting.
The plot from the beginning is not clear it just seems like a chronicle of the life of a Gorean slave girl and how she is viewed as property and is used at the whim and mercy of the typical Gorean male; however we do find later on as the tale progresses that the mighty Captain of Ar is not as he appears when in the presence of this slave girl.
Overall the book itself paints an interesting picture of Gorean life through the eyes of a slave girl as well as has a plot that is credible and well thought out when it appears in the latter chapters of the book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 February 2009The first 10 GOR books, although at times a bit repetitive on John Normans' supposed opinions at times, do make a coherent and interesting saga. Slave of Gor, #11, unfortunately, gets too bogged down in repetitive sentences, repetitive sentences, repetitive sentences, - well you get the idea? Repeating the same sentence 20 times in a chapter only works if the supporting text assists this type of strategy, but it really doesn't work.
I enjoy the basic idea of this 'alter-earth', (and is good on a sci-fi front too), but the author seems too get too excited himself, and starts to repeat himself too often (sorry, have I already mentioned this?). This always seems to be about the female "completely" ... must do this. WE KNOW THIS!!! In this, I mean it's mentioned so often we know the authors' opinions (oh no, repeating myself again!!?).
Precis - if you follow the series, plod through this book to learn some of the bigger plot, but be prepared for a few nights asleep with the book in hand - none too exciting. The other 2 'female' perspective books are much better.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 March 2015Having read the early books in the series, many years ago, I have been rereading them and have, up to this point, found them entertaining in spite of the decreasing quality of story lines and increase in obsession with describing the unnecessary discomforts imposed upon women.
The huge babble paragraphs in the later books can soon be recognised and skipped, but ‘Slave Girl of Gor’ is tedious, unless you are either a masochist or sadist. And, at times, you laugh out loud and wonder if the author has any experience of sexual activity involving a woman.
In spite of being an inventive and talented story teller, Johan Norman seems to have very little understanding of the nature of the psychology of truly physically powerful men, or the relative unimportant place that sex would play in such a society; sex would be little more than food and drink, enjoyed, but completely taken for granted until it became unavailable. In a society ruled by physically strong men, skilled in the arts of combat where the women are beautiful and submissive, the men would not behave like spiteful and spoilt weaklings, or the insane this, I fear, has more to do with John Norman getting off on his own fantasies than a believable description of such a society and it is increasingly ruining an otherwise fascinating series. I wish he would stop typing one handed and return to producing tales of rip-roaring adventure. Maybe the next in the series will be so.
If you are an ineffectual, spotty weakling, or simply weird and get off on bullying or being bullied in connection with sexual activity, ‘Slave Girl of Gor’ should appeal; however, even though I dearly miss the days before men were stripped of their masculine roll in society by their own inventions, I find the repetitive theme of unnecessary cowardly bullying, repugnant.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2020I read this when it was still all right to denigrate women. This successful young business woman is kidnapped by aliens from Gor and enslaved by a warrior type. Despite her protests, she is raped by him many times. By the end of the book, she is enthralled by him and wants nothing of her past life. This is pure porn masquerading as second rate SF. It is the only book I have ever physically destroyed which is why I remember it
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 December 2010JOhm Norman can write a good tale when he puts his mind to it. He can also write drivel. So far this is one of his worst. He repeats stetements ad nauseum. In a first time writer we'd accuse him of padding the tale. He is going on about slave theory to the nth degree, lecturing us in a boring way, rather than letting it emerge from the tale. "Show don't tell" as they say in leasson 1 of how to write.
And I am not comfortable about a woman being back handed so hard she vomits being described as "cuffed"

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, i love the entire "Chronicles of Gor" ...
Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseGood book, i love the entire "Chronicles of Gor" series. I even go as far as RPing it on SL. My favorites so far are "Captive of Gor", "Slave Girl of Gor", and "Kajira of Gor". I am currently on book 22 "Dancer of Gor" and enjoying it just as much. If you like Sci-fi and erotica with a focus on "Master/slave" or "Dominance/submission" themes you will love this book and the entire series, all 33 books.
