I've read a few Star Trek TOS novels now. This was one of the better ones:
    - main characters well written & represented
    - good suspense and jeopardy for both crew and the Enterprise itself
    - a novel enemy to fight
    - insights into McCoy and his relationship with Kirk and Spock
    - generally well paced, though falls prey to "put everything back in the box by the end" syndrome

If the plot device that puts McCoy under the spotlight (amnesia) wasn't so hard to accept I'd have given this five stars. As it stands, it's still a very enjoyable read.

As good as I remember, first read 20 years ago, and still good now.

This book is great! It manages to combine humour, adventure and all the usual Star Trek goodies all in one story. The story itself is quite gripping and you find yourself wanting to keep turning the pages. The idea of Dr McCoy not being around to give his 'save the crew' speech shows just how much he is a part of the team and I think the story conveys that very well. All in all I would definitely recommend reading this - whether you are reading the books in sequence or have never read a Star Trek book. You won't regret it.

Titan continue their line of novels based upon the original Star Trek series with #3 Dreams Of The Raven by Carmen Carter.
The Enterprise receives a distress call from a merchant vessel and rushes to help, believing that Klingons may be responsible for attacking, hijacking and destroying another trading fleet.
When they arrive they find only one ship left, badly damaged and about to fall apart. However, there is a disastrous event and the Enterprise is critically damaged. As the crew attempt to repair the vessel, now adrift in space and weeks away from any facility, another accident happens when a malfunction in the ship's gravity plating occurs.
There is only one victim - Dr. McCoy. The incident causes a head trauma and when he wakes from his coma they find he has lost all memory back to when he fell from a horse and suffered a similar head trauma - 25 years ago.
As the crew sift through the debris of the fleet, they find bodily remains of a new lifeform, a race of humanoid avians with powerful claws and hard chitinous beaks. The possibility that the Klingons have formed an alliance with a new race threaten to destabilise the quadrant.
It's nice for a book to focus on McCoy for a change and the nature of his injury gives us some insight into the man he was before Starfleet. His exchanges with Spock are particularly illuminating, especially as the two are now on very different footing, with Spock firmly in the right nearly all of the time. However, the real surprise comes in the last third of the book when McCoy reveals something about the current situation which nobody knew.
A good read and a very classic Trek adventure.

O que não se faz quando se perde a memória de vários anos!! Bones no centro da história, para variar. O bem estar de Kirk, Spock e Bones inteiramente interligados. Sempre salvando o mundo. Que digo eu? o universo, ufa, ainda bem! Gostei.

4.0 out of 5 stars These older TOS novels are BY FAR the BEST TOS novels -- you get the REAL characters you always loved to watch.
Reviewed in the United States on 20 September 2017
I prefer almost ANY of the OLDER ST TOS novels to the very recent new ones. The newest ones tend to appeal to those who are fans of DS9, and TNG with regard to plot types and character roles... it's like the new ones simply take a TNG or Voyager script, (or DS9) and substitute Kirk, Spock, McCoy, et. al into the script. I don't LIKE that at all. Way to PC for me! I like the old brash Bones McCoy, the Thick dialect speaking Chekov who sees "enemy wessels" Scotty with his thick brogue and often comic relief, Uhura with her just uplifting personality and that female touch, same with Chapel who also asserts herself quite nicely when bristled. I like the way the OLD scripts were written and too many of the new ones contain "Mea Culpas" from the "authors" of these who seem to make it their crusade to punish the old crew members for perceived wrongs in TOS scripts. For that reason I've all but given up on anything written for TOS after the 1990's. Just my opinion; but you lose that old series flavor with the new "fortified with PC dosages" versions. Now off the Soap Box and to THIS story.

A derelict Klingon vessel is found adrift in space not long after Kirk and the enterprise are victims of a surprise attack from some heretofore never seen aliens, which the Enterprise barely escapes from--but not without severe damage. It turns out the aliens (dubbed Ravens because of their rather peculiar bird-like beaks and other avian features) are a formidable foe, capable of consuming the brain of their victim, and in an audio-only communication, sound exactly like their late victim. Because of this, Kirk is confounded as to whom he can trust, and whom he cannot. If that isn't bad enough, McCoy, totally stressed out after untold hours in surgery of victims from the previous attack, is seriously injured in a follow up gravitational "bump" to the ship. McCoy recovers, but has lost all of his memories since he was a young aspiring doctor in the hills of Georgia and wanting NO part of Starfleet. Kirk is beleaguered by problems without the help of his trusted chief medical officer who--through the greater part of the story--thinks he's about 25 or so year old, and loathes the idea of being in Starfleet. The interim CMO is an adequate surgeon but totally lacking social skills and with little personality. Believe it or not, I have only told you an outline of the plot--there's lots more action in the story. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 (which is what I give most of TOS novels that aren't BULGING with nauseating political correctness), is that while it was interesting having a McCoy who thought he was still a young brash aspiring doctor--I missed a lot of that Spock/McCoy back-and-forth banter. All in all, though it's a good read, and all the Original Series fans should like this one.

I really enjoyed this one, although the concept of what the aliens look like is a little hokey. It's a fast and exciting read.
