I've written sf and fantasy for publication since 1975...but I've written a lot longer than that. I have a background in Mediterranean archaeology, Latin, Greek, that sort of thing; my hobbies are travel, photography, planetary geology, physics, pond-building for koi...I run a marine tank, can plumb most anything, and I figure-skate.

I believe in the future: I'm an optimist for good reason---I've studied a lot of history, in which, yes, there is climate change, and our species has been through it. We've never faced it fully armed with what we now know, and if we play our cards right, we'll use it as a technological springboard and carry on in very interesting ways.

I also believe a writer owes a reader a book that has more than general despair to spread about: I write about clever, determined people who don't put up with situations, not for long, anyway: people who find solutions inspire me.

There is a region of space called Serpents Reach, where ant-like creatures of almost human size, live in Hives of particular colours, an uneasy sharing of their world with human settlers who breed and trade cloned humans (azi) for slaves. There is discord amongst the humans and young Rean survives an attack upon her family, being nursed back to health by a nearby Hive. She inherits the family fortune and for a time wanders aimlessly between the worlds; she takes azi as companions and befriends a Warrior of the Blue Hive. Conflict amongst the ruling Families and between Hives of different affiliations comes to a head with Rean caught in the middle.

I don't get this book, which is perhaps why I didn't enjoy it. It is poorly written; full of sentences that don't make any sense, as well as a few spelling errors. There are a few good action sequences, which help to relieve the monotony, but most of the time you are trying to figure out what is going on. I rarely have to go back and re-read pages of books to try and figure out who did what and why and I had to do this several times here. The author fails to explain what is going on, and I still have no idea what was going on at the end. The universe that Cherryh describes seems to have a lot of depth, but this just isn't explored very well.
In conclusion, a good idea, but poorly executed.

Typical of the author, this a deep look at the development of a mixed human/ alien culture. I would have preferred a Kindle copy. Still I enjoyed reading this book again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent SF Read

I've loved this book since it came out in paperback, and I've read it several times. It's a richly imagined, tautly told story of humanity's activities in a distant star system, and of how human actions impact the indigenous population - and vice versa. Twisty bit - the indigenous population is very like a huge species of hive insect with a very non-human intelligence and communication system, and an utterly unknowable history and lifestyle. Complications ensue.
