- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 February 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseNo additional comments on the story but want to make what I hope is useful observation about the imprint itself. The print in this series is very poor and actually resembles a rather poor photocopy. This is irritating and detracts from the reading experience. I read 'Grass' a week ago and noticed this but thought it was just a bad copy and went ahead to purchase this title along with a couple of others. The printing is the same substandard throughout. Unfortunately it will deter me from purchasing other titles in the series.

This book and his wonderful short stories are a must read for all lovers of the inspired future history. Such fun, complex characters and amazing plots make Norstrillia a memorable read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 February 2001Cordwiainer Smith was writing witty, imaginative sf long before Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett et al cheapened the idea. At the heart of Cordwainer Smith's future history lies the Instrumentality of Mankind; a benovolent force able to see beyond the considerations of easy liberalism. I think that the authors experience of the Far East and Pentagon subterfuge informs his work as he often attempts to explain the motivation of rulers, spies and mystics This book has many faults, being whimsical, episodic and leaving much unexplained. But it still constitutes a major imaginative achievement unlike any other in sf or fantasy.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2023On a planet-sized Australia -where, with recent-events poignancy, Queen Elizabeth still rules in-absentia, and is expected back at any time- deliberately primitivised by galactic standards, a young man stands ready to inherit a huge land-holding complete with truly gigantic herd of sick sheep that produce stroon - the most in-demand substance in existence because it imbues immortality. But, due to the designs of a vitriolic old school friend, he must flee his homeworld to Mars, and, ultimately, Earth... which he has somehow managed to buy in its near-entirety. Thus ensues a kind of Stranger In A Strange Land, without the misogyny.
Like Smith's Rediscovery of Man short stories (of which Norstrilia could be considered a sort of condensed version - certainly it is in the same universe), and as might be inferred from the above, silliness and a sort of over-arching jollity are very much in evidence here... as well as a love of life and living, an almost breathless inventiveness, and a desire to upend -if not lampoon- every rule of Space Opera - again, just like the shorts.
It's been around for a good few decades now, but it's one of those novels so unique it will probably always stand well. Thoroughly enjoyed and thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars オーストラリア
映画マッドマックスを思わせる自然と暴力。オーストラリアってこんななのかと思っていたら行ってみたら割とそうだった。全然傾向が違うがブロンテの嵐が丘のような直接的感情が与えられる。

5.0 out of 5 stars All has been said ... this story stands the test of time.
Seldom you encounter a book that has only glowing, raving, excited, enthusiastic reviews. With this book, I would be surprised about anything else.
Apart from being a highly fascinating man in his own right, Cordwainer Smith was a literary Genius who has created one of SF's most complete, most thoroughly thought-through and elaborated future histories of mankind spanning some 8,000 years of development.
Ranging from the first age of space over planoform space travel, guided by the 'Instrumentality of mankind' made possibly by the life-extending 'stroon' and the support of underpeople (genetically engineered animals in human shapes) towards a possible common vision for all people and underpeople.
This is the focus of this book that I consider his masterpiece - and it is a gripping and novel story to that.
This story is my favourite SF story of all, and I have read quite a few.
Best regards,
Andy

3.0 out of 5 stars Three Stars
Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseNot really as good as Smith's earlier efforts. But a good read nevertheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars It’s Cordwainer Smith .. one of the greatest SF writers. Nuff said.
If you like SF and never heard of Cordwainer Smith .. do yourself a favour and buy it. Too much of SF is space opera or interstellar war. Smith (if that’s his real name - and it isn’t), is that rare beast - someone who creates a unique universe and unique characters.

2.0 out of 5 stars pésima calidad de impresión
