Amazon Review

In The Vampire Armand, Anne Rice returns to her indomitable Vampire Chronicles and recaptures the gothic horror and delight she first explored in her classic tale Interview with the Vampire . The story begins in the aftermath of Memnoch the Devil. Vampires from all over the globe have gathered around Lestat, who lies prostrate on the floor of a cathedral. Dead? In a coma? As Armand reflects on Lestat's condition, he is drawn by David Talbot to tell the story of his own life. The narrative abruptly rushes back to 15th-century Constantinople, and the Armand of the present recounts the fragmented memories of his childhood abduction from Kiev. Eventually, he is sold to a Venetian artist (and vampire), Marius. Rice revels in descriptions of the sensual relationship between the young and still-mortal Armand and his vampiric mentor. But when Armand is finally transformed, the tone of the book dramatically shifts. Raw and sexually explicit scenes are displaced by Armand's introspective quest for a union of his Russian Orthodox childhood, his hedonistic life with Marius, and his newly acquired immortality. These final chapters remind one of the archetypal significance of Rice's vampires; at their best, Armand, Lestat, and Marius offer keen insights into the most human of concerns.

The Vampire Armand is richly intertextual; readers will relish the retelling of critical events from Lestat and Louis's narratives. Nevertheless, the novel is very much Armand's own tragic tale. Rice deftly integrates the necessary back-story for new readers to enter her epic series, and the introduction of a few new voices adds a fresh perspective--and the promise of provocative future installments. --Patrick O'Kelley

Anne Rice was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, which provided the backdrop for many of her famous novels. She was the author of more than 30 books, including her first novel, Interview with the Vampire, which was published in 1976. It has since gone on to become one of the best-selling novels of all time, and was adapted into a major motion picture starring Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Kirsten Dunst, and Antonio Banderas. In addition to The Vampire Chronicles, Anne was the author of several other best-selling supernatural series including Mayfair Witches, Queen of the Damned, the Wolf Gift, and Ramses the Damned. Under the pen name A.N. Roquelaure, Anne was the author of the erotic (BDSM) fantasy series, The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy. Under the pen name Anne Rampling she was the author of two erotic novels, Exit to Eden and Belinda. A groundbreaking artist whose work was widely beloved in popular culture, Anne had this to say of her work: "I have always written about outsiders, about outcasts, about those whom others tend to shun or persecute. And it does seem that I write a lot about their interaction with others like them and their struggle to find some community of their own. The supernatural novel is my favorite way of talking about my reality. I see vampires and witches and ghosts as metaphors for the outsider in each of us, the predator in each of us...the lonely one who must grapple day in and day out with cosmic uncertainty."

These tales are full of the rich blood of the first brood. Pain and hope and fear and symbolism. The sweep of books in the vampire chronicles reveals and revels in the circumstances of her vampiric clan. Here you are drawn with reluctance through Armand's painful history. His knowing and motivations are not simple. His horror and prayers are heart breaking. I would have sworn these stories were all fair grounds mirrors showing multiple images of the brat Prince. But no. This was Armand's testimony a tale she told it well. To read this is to love Anne Rice's Auburn man boy.

Excellent book, deeply captivating story. I was looking for more and more. It leaves you in suspense, never wanting to stop reading it. You feel like you are that character, or and you are witnessing the story yourself, in the book. Highly recommend.

I got the book in 2 days i believe, it’s overall a great book. I was a little disappointed that the cover is more goldish rather then pure silver. The book itself was a little damaged on the corners. But for the price it’s absolutely worth it. The story is very well told.

Love this book. Gives me a love/hate relationship with Armand and Marius. It was kinda dry when they referenced Memnoch but it picked back up later.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written novel for grown ups about vampires that aren't glittery teenagers
Reviewed in Canada on 31 January 2017
One of my favourites from Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles series.

If you like vampires, you'll love this. Unless you like Twilight...then maybe skip this series. (Sparkly vampires...pfffft.) Anne Rice is a true storyteller who can paint a picture and stir up emotion with her words. It's so refreshing to read a well-written supernatural novel with some depth and grit to it.

I highly recommend reading the Vampire Chronicle series in order. The series jumps around a lot and crosses paths with another of Rice's series, so here's the order I'd recommend (I was a nerdy librarian's assistant as a kid, so I know what I'm talking about):

    Interview With The Vampire
    The Vampire Lestat
    Queen of The Damned
    Tale of The Body Thief
    Memnoch The Devil
    Pandora
    Vampire Armand
Vittorio The Vampire (This was the only one I might skip. It's different characters than the rest of the series and is my least favourite)
    Merrick
    Blood And Gold
    The Witching Hour
    Lasher
    Taltos
    Blackwood Farm
    Blood Canticle
    Prince Lestat
Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis
